[Off Topic] Win-2K startup and shutdown time

I have had success again today in making the logoff's from 45+ seconds to <
10 seconds by doing the following. Granted this is 2000 Pro not server, but
it should work for server as well.

Open the MMC and add the Group Policy snap-in, then open the Group Policy
editor. Go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon
and find the policy "Maximum retries to unload and update user profile." Do
not click "Disable" nor "Not Configured" as that just will use the default
of 60. Rather, lower the # of tries to unload downward from 60. I figured,
"If you can't unload it, don't bother trying", so I set mine to 0 and
shutdown is (finally!) instantaneous once again.

Todd,
I've got the same problem with my machine. Although I haven't had the
time to fully explore the cause, I suspect it has alot to do with
loading the profiles. Here's a little experiment to try.
Log onto your computer as another user, preferably one who has a
minimal profile. Check the log in/out times against yours. Is there a
noticeable difference?
My profile is ~343 MB and takes 90 sec to load and unload. Another
profile that is 1/10 the size of mine loads in about 30 sec and
unloads in 15 sec. (My PC is comparable to yours in speed.)
Anything in the My Documents folder, temp internet files, recent
documents, favorites, and a whole bunch of other areas will increase
the profile size. The other factor is how many goodies are auto-
starting at boot.
I may be completely wrong, but it seems to fit my situation.

Off topic but a good tech question.

Why does Win-2K-Pro take so long to start up and shut down?

Any tweaks to speed up the process?

Thanks

Todd,

Are you running Active Directory with roaming profiles?

Todd,

I've noticed the same thing. We're using active directory though. And some
machines load right up, and others seem to take forever.

I have a server that has an incredibly slow network connection.

This started when we installed our DSL connection.

One of the first things I did was to install many patches and security
updates one all 3 of our 2000 Servers. 2 of the Servers work with out any
problems. But the 3rd now has an incredibly slow network connection.

I have tried updating the drives for the NIC.
I have replaced the NIC (with a new NIC by a different manufacturer)
I have plugged the server into different ports on our switch.
I have played with the speed settings at the switch and the server.
I have even formatted the system drive and reinstalled Windows.

None of this has helped.

Any one have any ideas. I am almost ready to buy a new server! (but this
one is much better then any I could afford to buy right now... Except for
the network speed.)

Turned it off - performance is still slow.

On startup I get the W2K splash screen ... the slider bar goes about 1/2 way
across and then stops for about 20 seconds

On shutdown - I get "Saving Settings" for about 45 seconds

P800 - 512 meg ram

Shouldn't take this long ...

Todd,
Look in Event Viewer and see if you are getting this error:
Event ID: 1000
Source Userenv

If so take a look at this web site. I have had success on speeding up
logoff's by doing the procedure listed after the link, it is part of the
link given.

Good Luck!

There are two Microsoft hotfixes, Q281267 and Q285192, however they did not
fix the problem in my case.

Not a fix, but here's a workaround that actually works: Open the MMC and add
the Group Policy snap-in, then open the Group Policy editor. Go to Computer
Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon and find the policy
"Maximum retries to unload and update user profile." Do not click "Disable"

Is this possibly an anti-virus program issue. Norton has always been

You might try connecting to a different port on the switch. And do a power
reset on the switches.

Todd,

Give this a try:

Manually stop each of your services (or as many as the OS will allow) and
then shut down. Now shut down the system and see how long it takes.

I had to do this to convince myself that it was the OS stopping each of the
services that was taking the time to shut down the system and it proved to
be true, at least for me. I have a couple of servers that take as long as
15 - 20 minutes to shut down. You can go so far as to test the shut-down
time after turning off only one different service each time to find the real
culprits (recommended for only the truly anal-retentive; doesn't change
anything but if it helps you sleep better, then - hey!).

Todd,
I've got the same problem with my machine.

Turned it off - performance is still slow.

On startup I get the W2K splash screen ... the slider bar goes about 1/2
way
across and then stops for about 20 seconds

On shutdown - I get "Saving Settings" for about 45 seconds

P800 - 512 meg ram

Shouldn't take this long ...

Turned it off - performance is still slow.

On startup I get the W2K splash screen ... the slider bar goes about
1/2

On shutdown - I get "Saving Settings" for about 45 seconds

Look in your services file, see if Task Scheduler is running. Turn it
off if it is. Task Scheduler will search every network drive it can
looking for something to do both on start up and shut down. It's a
real
performance hit.

I have had success again today making the logoff's from 45+ seconds to < 10
seconds by doing the following. Granted this is 2000 Pro not server, but
should work for server as well.

Not a fix, but here's a workaround that actually works: Open the MMC and add
the Group Policy snap-in, then open the Group Policy editor. Go to Computer
Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon and find the policy
"Maximum retries to unload and update user profile." Do not click "Disable"
nor "Not Configured" as that just will use the default of 60. Rather, lower
the # of tries to unload downward from 60. I figured, "If you can't unload
it, don't bother trying", so I set mine to 0 and shutdown is (finally!)
instantaneous once again.

Thanks,
Jim Moore

Subject: [Vantage] Re: [Off Topic] Win-2K startup and shutdown time

Todd,
I've got the same problem with my machine.
