I have to respond to this one...

You may not go through all the "trouble of creating the links", but by
the time you've clicked Edit | Find (Ctrl-F to the keyboard savy) and
typed in the name of the sheet (what was it called again?) - possibly
clicked find next several times...I would have clicked on the sheet,
found my information and closed it! Also for infrequent users of the
spreadsheet, they will be able to easily find their information. Might
even want to create a macro or link on the sheets to take you back to
the "home" page.

As demonstrated by the answers to this query, there are many solutions
each having pros and cons.

Is it Friday yet?

It is a drop down "Within" Sheet or Workbook.

I wouldn't go through all the trouble of doing the extra worksheet and
doing links

Just at the top left hand corner cell A1 put the Name of the sheet
within the sheet the name of the tab and when you search the entire
workbook, it will go to that cell, unless there is another cell with
that exact name of the tab in it???

I use the ctrl-f to search for data within the sheet but, I do not see

What are you searching for? Specific data within any sheet? Just do
a
ctrl-F for find, and under the extended options, you can choose to
search
the entire workbook or just the current sheet.

Hello,

Does anyone know of a utility that might be contained in NT Server or
Workstation or in one of the resource kits to allow you to push a file out
to PC's in your domain with administrator priv's? Or, one you can download?

I need to get some files out to all PC's and would rather not have to walk
to each one (35) or Email and have the user try and put them in the correct
place.

Thanks

You could create a shortcut and copy the shortcut to the client PCs in the
logon.bat file. That way the file would retain the correct rights.

You should be able to access the DOS prompt, use the NET USE X:
\\computername\c$ to map a drive to their machine's c drive (or d or
whatever). Then you can put/take any files you want on their hard drive.

As a workaround without a utility:

If your workstations are NT 4.0 or above, you can log onto your
workstation (assuming it's NT) with administrative privliges;
Use the start/run command and open each user's local hd:

//user1/c$ and copy the file to whatever directory you wanted to.

Another off topic request.

In our ongoing battle of trying to keep end users from installing bootleg
software on their PC's or otherwise messing with the configurations ...

We currently use Crowd Control for our Win-95 and Win-98 machines. However,
Crowd Control will not work with Win-NT or Win-2000 machines.

We have reviewed Deep Freeze and run into the same limitation. ( Although
Deep Freeze is supposed to have a new version in 6 to 8 months that will
work. )

Baseball bats have also been to no avail ...

Does anyone know of a utility that will run on an Win-NT and/or Win-2000
machine that totally prevents end users from installing software or changing
the configuration ?

If they are not administrators of the local machine, NT will prevent them
from installing any software that would alter the system (i.e. most Windows
programs). If that isn't enough, Policy Editor (poledit) will let you
specify exactly which programs the system is allowed to run.

Try removing the CD-ROM's and Floppy drives. Then if you really want to get
people mad, install roving profiles and setup the policy editor, and start
removing items like the RUN command and SETTING folder from the start
button. Then set it up so that they can not browse network drives, etc. Its
worked very well on our shop SPC stations.

Hey Brian, Why not use manditory profiles? It's a pain to set up but well
worth it if you have users who think they are rocket scientist. You can set
it up so that they can only view what is on the screen and have access only
to that.

NT gives you more power as the administrator...policy editor works well. Of
course, if removing the drives seems too drastic, there are these little
devices you can get that insert into the drive and LOCK!!! Now, I'm sure
the locks are pickable, but it would slow 'em down a bit. Also, just
disconnecting the drive inside the box rather than removing it worked for a
couple of our systems. Then I could re-connect it fairly easily.

Unfortunately, physical punishment (the old fashioned stocks come to mind)
now gets you into trouble with all kinds of government agencies and brings
lawyers into your building.

ANY KIND OF ACTIVITY, (i'VE DONE SUCH ON OUR 18+ NT MACHINES), No one does
anything on these machines without admin access. I also use a program

I want to add a second switch and make a 2nd subnet to speed things

Why do you want to add a second IP subnet? Perhaps a better question is "Why
do you think your Ethernet bandwidth is a problem ?".

Using switches instead of hubs should negate any reason for using subnets
unless you have routers connecting 2 facilities. If you are going to use
switches, take a look at the Cisco 2924XL switch. It allows you to use
multiple wires for connecting the 2 switches. IE 2 wires would give you a
400 Mbps link, 5 wires would give you a 1 gig link. Works great, less
filling.

Sub-netting is sort of passe, unless you have a really big site and are
running routers, or have two locations talking over a WAN
connection. 100Mb switched ethernet should handle a place the size of a
typical Vantage customer. Switches have gotten inexpensive enough, that
it's not too expensive to have every workstation on it's own switched port.

What are you running with currently?

Ted,

I just found the fix. You need to set the folder and all files in it to
full control for the user that is going to use it on that machine. That's
the only folder that needs to be changed. Also, when you install it, you
need to run the install using 'Run As' and run it as an Administrator.

Thanks for you effort,

Dave Cole

I am looking at upgrading my Windows NT4 Primary Domain Controller to
windows 2000. Has anyone used the upgrade option with windows 2000 or

Ron,

We did a reformat and clean install. It went just fine.

Also, what brand of server are you running? If you purchased it with NT
then it is most likely old enough there may be some bios/rom/firmware
updates you need to do either before, during or after the Windows 2K
install. With our Compaq server, there were several of what Compaq calls
ROM Packs or Support Packs.

Ron,

I have found that it's best to do a clean install. If you have corrupted files currently then do just an upgrade then you may still have the corrupted files. The upgrade may not install or replace over them. If you do a format then a fresh, clean install then all your old corrupted files will be replaced.

I tried to upgrade twice from Windows NT to Windows 2000 on my PDC. Both
times it went really bad. I finally just formatted and started over. IT
was a pain but I knew I could get everything running that way. I now have
enough experience with Active Directory that I don't think it would be a
problem to upgrade.

From past experience with both Windows and programming, I don't even upgrade
clients from one OS to another. The reason, things tend to slow down
significantly and problems tend to occur more often than if you were to
install a fresh copy over a low level formatted drive.

I like things clean on a system; reason: you know things will work.

Otherwise, you could someday spend hours trying to figure out why something
doesn't work or why you are receiving the infamous "Blue Screen of Death".

In a server's case, DEFINITELY would install a fresh copy and not even
attempt an upgrade.

I only perform upgrades if I am forced into it depending on the situation,
cause I like knowing exactly what's been and what's currently on my system,
I like control.

Just offering another personal opinion,

A windows 2000 PC can not join a NT domain. It is my understanding, that if
you want to do a clean install you will have to create a new domain and
rebuild all of your user accounts and groups. If you do not want to do that
you have to upgrade the PDC first, which will convert your PDC to active
directory. Also the first active directory server is special you just can
not go back and format it latter after you add another server as an active
directory machine.

you want to do a clean install you will have to create a new domain and
rebuild all of your user accounts and groups. If you do not want to do
that
you have to upgrade the PDC first, which will convert your PDC to active
directory. Also the first active directory server is special you just can
not go back and format it latter after you add another server as an active
directory machine.

Hi all,

I am looking at upgrading my Windows NT4 Primary Domain Controller to
windows 2000. Has anyone used the upgrade option with windows 2000 or
has everyone re-formatted and done a clean install? If you upgraded
did it go smooth? Anything I should watch out for?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have been looking at Scott's reply for a full day trying to find a
polite way to respond. I am struggling, but I will try.

Any one who has read his response please ignore it. It is inaccurate on
all accounts. Everything that he says connot be done, can.

Windows 2000 (w2k) can join a NT domain. W2k server can be a part of a
NT domain. W2k can be installed without AD (Server and wkstn). You can
remove your fist W2k server from AD (it may not be easy - transfer FSMO
roles). Etc. etc.

Enough said. Now to answer Ron's question.

Upgrading and doing a clean install depends on your environment and what
you want to accomplish. Are you moving to AD? How many users? How
familiar are you with W2k & AD?

If you are just wanting to replace your PDC with a w2k server(as a PDC)
my advice is don't. If you are moving to w2k and AD then I strongly
suggest a clean install on a new (test) server, get to know w2k and AD.

I think the easiest way to do a "clean" move to Active Directory (AD)
without losing your users and permissions is to grab a vacant workstation,
rebuild it as an NT 4.0 server, and promote it to the PDC of the network.
Then, upgrade that machine to AD. The rest of your servers will become part
of the AD. Then you can do "clean" installs without losing anything. After
putting W2K server on your old PDC, have it become part of the AD. Then
start transferring control from the temporary server to the new one (Master
Catalog, etc...). The temporary machine doesn't need to be much (even for
W2K server). We did this exact process successfully and used a PII 400 with
128 MB of RAM.

First I want to apologies for not being clear in my first post. When I said
that

as a Active Directory Machine and simply was not clear in what I said.

The point I was trying to make, and if I an wrong I would LOVE to know how

to keep your accounts and groups intact and not have to create another
domain. You can not simply install W2k on a clean PC add Active Directory
and have it suck in the existing domain info.

Also I did not say you could not remove the first Active directory server
from an domain. I just said you can not SIMPLY FORMAT and then reinstall
W2k
Server on that machine, it does have special roles in the directory and,
as Jim noted, those roles need to me moved to another server before you
remove it from service.

Again I wish to apologies for my confusing presentation of what I was trying
to say. I wanted Ron to know it was a little more complicated then just
formating
and installing W2k. I hope that as a result of my last post all my future
posts will
not be summarily ignored. Please read them, then ignore them.

You mean aside from using the general tab in internet explorer properties?
You can set the history to zero (0) days and probably a simple batch routine
to delete *.* in the temporary internet files folder.

Not free ($24.95) but I am currently trying out Window Washer from Webroot.
Not only cleans cache, cookies, history, temp files but also meda player
files and other places IE puts stuff. There are plug-ins for various
applications to wipe their recently used file histories (So the boss doesn't
say; "What's this resume.doc in your Word file list?"). You can also
designate specific cookies to ignore. It has scheduling to run periodically
and/or at shutdown. Even has a bleach cycle to 10X overwrite files with
random bits for the truly paranoid. My main use (aside from space savings)
is to reduce stubborn cookies that can lead to targeted spam without turning
off or deleting all cookies.

Good Morning Everyone!

My company is FINALLY upgradeing our servers, but with this upgrade
comes some software problems. We are currenly running a NT server
and a Novell server and we are going to 2 WIN 2000 servers. The
software problem is with our Faxserve.... The version we currently
have is for netware. So I need to either purchase the Faxserve for
WIN 2000 or come up with something else that is just as easy to
use....

My question to you is do any of you run a desktop faxing software? If
you do what is it and what do you think of it? ANY and ALL
recommendations are welcome

Thanks!

Thanks!

We use Genifax from Omtool ( www.omtool.com <http://www.omtool.com> ) and
really like it. It is very tightly integrated with Outlook and Exchange so
you actually fax from email. Works great.

Check out www.faxback.com We use their NetSatisFAXtion product. You can
fax via e-mail, their own fax front end or Winfax Pro. We have it running
on a Windows 2000 workstation, but it runs on server too. The price is good
and the functionality is awesome. We purchased a BrookTrout fax card for
about $650 with two ports and it handles our fax load pretty good. We have
60 installed users.

I haven't seen where you can search for a sheet, but if you're just
looking for an easy way to open the sheet an option would be to:
1) insert another worksheet (no really)
2) type in text to identify the sheet
3) create a hyperlink for the text to the worksheet it represents
4) setup the "link" sheet so it is always the first sheet displayed

What are you searching for? Specific data within any sheet? Just do a
ctrl-F for find, and under the extended options, you can choose to search
the entire workbook or just the current sheet.

Paul,

CTRL-F will just search for information/cell on the worksheets in the entire
workbook - it will not search for a specific name of worksheet. Maybe the
first line of every worksheet enter your worksheet name - then you would be
able to use CTRL-F.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hello Paul,

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but if you right click in the bottom left corner of the spreadsheet where the arrows are, you can see a list of all the worksheets and can select one from the list.

Hello Paul,

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but if you right click
in the bottom left corner of the spreadsheet where the arrows are, you
can see a list of all the worksheets and can select one from the list.

This is an off topic question. I use an Excel spread sheet with about
25-50
sheet in a workbook and I was wondering if you can do a search for
sheets in
a workbook? Thanks in advance.
