We had installed CA Brightstore Backup Agent on it and we restarted it.

After that it would restart on it's own while trying to boot windows.

We tried most of the other suggestions here with out success. No we didn't
restore from backup we reinstalled from CD.

What caused the system restart? Did you restore from a backup or did
the system crash?

Our 2003 server quit on us about a month ago. The hardware was fine but it
would not boot Windows. It would start to boot and then just restart when
it tried to load Windows.

We ended up re-installing the OS. I hope someone has a better solution for
your problem.

If you have not done so already try starting the server in "safe mode". This may provide you with some additional troubleshooting options as well as allow you to view the event viewer to see if it points to any issues.

Did you just apply some patches, software or drivers?

Try booting with "Last Known Good Configuration". This will boot with a copy
of a system's hardware configuration and driver settings taken from the
system's registry when the OS last successfully booted.

If it was a driver and you can get in with Safe Mode then go to that Device
in Device Manager and Roll Back to the previous driver.

I have not had this with Win2003 but with other versions I have sometimes had to resort to reloading the OS over the existing OS. First thing I usually try is booting from OS CD and trying a Repair...this will often restore missing DLL files and sometimes gets things going again (about 15% of the time). If not then re-install the OS over the existing one (not the scrub/reload method which reformats the drive!). This basically copies all the OS files to the server that it had when originally installed. Any subsequent security patches and service pack updates are lost and would have to be redone. But the registry is mostly left alone so links to applications and driver info is retained. I don't do this often enough to recall if the Reload OS option is part of Repair or part of Installation but I know I can usually find it when I need to.

It turns out it was a known issue by Microsoft and occurred due to the
DST update that we ran last week. We have it fixed now but thanks for
your reply.
