Old Vantage version problems

In ProControl the environment settings look ok, with ACCESS=ALL and
DLC=C:\DWC\DLCSERV.

There don't appear to be any orphaned Prowin32 processes.

The server directory permissions look fine with everyone having full control
and the client machine can browse the mapped directory.

As you've suggested I've created a shortcut to:

F:\DLC\bin\prowin32.exe -db F:\Vantage\db\dcdv7.db -N TCP -H
192.168.0.100 -S vntgserv -inp 1200

However all this does is launches the Progress procedure editor.

I'm contemplating wiping the test machines and installing NT4 to see if it's
something to do with my Windows 2000 setup that's causing the problem.

Paul.

We have an unusual situation in which I am attempting to install a very old
version of Vantage (3.20) on a modern system. Epicor UK support have been
helpful but haven't been able to help me much so I thought I'd ask here.

Firstly let me explain why I need to do this. We currently run Vantage 5.20
on our main system (soon to upgrade to 6.00) and we have recently bought
another company that is still running Vantage 3.20 on an old NT server.

The decision has been made to bring them up to the same Vantage version as
us so to do this I have set up a test server and workstation (Windows 2000
server and pro, both SP4) in order to test the upgrade process (3.2 to 4.0
to 5.0 to 5.2).

However despite following the installation instructions to the letter I
cannot get Vantage 3.20 running on the test systems. Progress 8.3A and
Vantage appear to install correctly with no error messages and ProControl
seems to run fine on the server. When I try to launch Vantage from the
client machine all I get is the splash screen appearing for about 0.5
seconds then vanishing. No errors are logged in the error logs on either
the server or client machine and looking at task manager on the client
machine it appears that the client simply aborted as there are no running
processes.

This has got me well and truly stumped! Any helpful suggestions or
troubleshooting advice would be appreciated. I'm wondering whether Vantage
3.2/Progress 8.3A is incompatible with Windows 2000 so maybe I should try
the process again under NT4? Has anyone every tried running 3.20 on Windows
2000 before?

I installed Vantage 3.2 on a Windows 2000 SP2 Standard server last year
without a problem. I did this for another company. I didn't have any
issues. Sorry I can't be more helpfull.

I had to upgrade from 3.2 to 5.2 recently. I also installed 3.2 on Windows 2000 to do test runs. I had no problems with the installation. Can you run vantage on the server itself? Try that to see if it's a server issue or a client issue. Was there a different version of vantage on any of these systems before you installed 3.2? If there was, there is probably still references to that version. Try to use completely clean machines to install 3.2.

This sounds like a network problem however the MS knowledge base article at

Just a wild stab but double check the HOSTS and SERVICES files for proper entries and port numbers. I've seen the installation not get this right a time or two.

Hosts and Services on both the server and client machines both look fine,
the installer had made correct entries there.

Hosts and Services on both the server and client machines both look fine,
the installer had made correct entries there.

Useful links for the Yahoo!Groups Vantage Board are: ( Note: You must have
already linked your email address to a yahoo id to enable access. )

Crystal Reports and other 'goodies', please goto:

Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
According to ProControl it is, the gears are turning and the database has a
green tick in the details page. Plus there's various entries in the event
log on the server when I start up such as:

Message from PROGRESS database c:\dwc\vantage\db\dcdv7 (5199)
BROKER 0: Server started by SYSTEM on CON:. (4281)

Which looks like it's started OK plus I've checked that the port on the
server (2800) is actually responding to connections by telnetting to it -
it's not a telnet service but the fact that a connection opens on this port
indicates that the service seems to be accepting connections.

Paul.

Anyone here running CA ARCServe 9.01 and Vantage at all on the same server?

If so, anyone experience any problems with backup jobs running?

Our hardware checks out fine and the software can even format the tapes,
inventory them, or whatever through the devices section. But as soon as I
try to start an actual backup job ... Nothing happens, the job just runs
forever.

We're on an NT 4.0 Server here (Unfortunately) and all support people
Exabyte, CA, and newsgroups on the web are all pointing their fingers to my
server. They are thinking that another process is running on it which is
conflicting with CA ARCServe.

The only other thing on this server however is just progress 9.1d and
Vantage 5.20.

Anyone run into these problems?

Also, Veritas Backup Exec 9 wont install on this server, keeps saying that
something running on the server is interrupting its install.

No virus scanners or virus' or anything like that, just kinda lost here as
to what to do. But, if I cant figure this out by tonight, ill be moving the
backup system to a windows 2000 server of mine.

I appreciate any help given,

We are running a Win2k Server with Arc Serve 9 and Vantage 4. We have no
problems with the backup software as of yet. I know we had a few
problems with the Disaster recovery option when creating our recovery
CD. Arc Serve had trouble recognizing Windows 2000 server as the
operating system. We ended up reinstalling the software after talking
with CA support. That seemed to fix the problem.

Would trying Ghost to put the old Vantage onto the new server work?

Double check the .ini and .vtg (.mfg) files. Sometimes, even the working
directory is pointing to the wrong drive which would cause your problem.

We are currently running 6.00.5. I am running Veritas BackUp exec on a separate, low-end server. I have experienced problems like this in the past and the most effective way around the problem is to leave the back up by itself.

We are running a Win2k Server with Arc Serve 9 and Vantage 4. We have no
problems with the backup software as of yet. I know we had a few problems
with the Disaster recovery option when creating our recovery CD. Arc Serve
had trouble recognizing Windows 2000 server as the operating system. We
ended up reinstalling the software after talking with CA support. That
seemed to fix the problem.

Jessee,
I'm sure you have tried this, but just in case: Have you tried: stopping
all the ArcServe Engines and restarting them or looking for a stuck process
or restarting the server?

Everything looks fine in the .vtg and .ini files, the paths appear to be

Paul -

Look for duplicate port usage in your services file.
There were two installs levels from DCD/Dataworks/Epicor
during the evolution of vantage that used the same port number.
If you have all these versions installed, you may have the same
port number in the services file referenced by two different names.

Likewise make sure that any newer levels of Progress and Vantage
have been removed from the client (primarily in the registry) and
you might want to also try changing the -H from the server name
to it's IP address and the -S from the name to it's Port number in
the vtg file.

Hope my two cents helps. With enough luck by the time your
done collecting all the two cents you'll have enough for a beer!
