On Time Shipment Report

That is pretty close, but also part of it is that the guy running it is
not receptive to changing his method. Any time you suggest something
his comment is always â€œWell the problem with that is â€¦..â€ The reason
is usually trivial but its enough to kibash any attempt to try anything
new.

So, let me guess ... Your finishing department probably goes from a
light
load to swamped. When you are swamped you don't have enough people and
when the load is light management is pretty sure you could probably lay
off
a few more people.

When you are swamped it takes twice as long therefore you're late on
deliveries.

You donâ€™t think we do Root Cause Analysis do you? NAHâ€¦
thatâ€™s for sissies. If you distill our process down you have Molding
and Finishing. We are usually about 98% on time with the molding but it
bottle necks at the finishing room. So the complaint is â€œNot enough
Peopleâ€ in finishing. Management wonâ€™t staff at any higher levels.
There really is no reason 2, 3 or 4.

This on going debate is always fun. Production has given me buckets of
â€œSPECIALâ€ circumstances where late is not late ( 2 + 2 = fish). Iâ€™ve
programmed ALL of their special circumstances into our on time report.
Guess what â€¦. it makes about a 2% difference in the numbers.

And then you get to what I'd love to see:

"Earliest allowable delivery date."

If I had a field for that AND I could get my sales people to ask the
question we could then schedule delivery to the earliest possible
delivery
date instead of the actual "DUE DATE".

Even if that's just a 5 day window it would give us a 5 days for "Stuff"
to
happen and, if God forbid, we actually do complete the job on time it
would
give us 5 days to play with in terms of "Optimizing" our deliveries. (
We
have our own trucks and it only pays to send them out when they are at
least
75% full ).

Just in time delivery to a fixed due date is a crap shoot at our
company.

moving target. There are two fields due date and ship by. Due date is
when
it needs to be at the customer location, ship by when it needs to ship.

created a calculated field that compared these two dates. If the ship
by is
greater than the due by then that is the new date target. You could
qualify
it even more with a VB check box or two in the ship header.

I created a report that identifies late and short shipments. We run

report each month and check it against our internal goals for
ontime/full
shipments. (driving value is ShipHead.ShipDate)

Today I learned that occasionally (few times a week) a shipment is ready
to
ship, but our main subcontractor (paint) is at capacity. They ask us to
delay for a day/weekend before making the sub-c shipment. Our customers
allow 7 days for sub contracting (after our manufacturing ship date), so
technically we still meet their ship date. But because we are delaying
shipments to our subcontractor (thus delaying the shiphead.shipdate), we
aren't meeting our manufacturing shipment dates.

I don't want to tell shipping to print out packing slips before the
shipment
leaves our dock for obvious reasons...does anyone have a work around to
this?

This on going debate is always fun. Production has given me buckets of
â€œSPECIALâ€ circumstances where late is not late ( 2 + 2 = fish). Iâ€™ve
programmed ALL of their special circumstances into our on time report.
Guess what â€¦. it makes about a 2% difference in the numbers.

give us 5 days to play with in terms of "Optimizing" our deliveries. (

have our own trucks and it only pays to send them out when they are at

75% full ).

Just in time delivery to a fixed due date is a crap shoot at our
company.

allow 7 days for sub contracting (after our manufacturing ship date), so
technically we still meet their ship date. But because we are delaying
shipments to our subcontractor (thus delaying the shiphead.shipdate), we
aren't meeting our manufacturing shipment dates.

I don't want to tell shipping to print out packing slips before the
shipment
leaves our dock for obvious reasons...does anyone have a work around to
this?

Todd,
You donâ€™t think we do Root Cause Analysis do you? NAHâ€¦
thatâ€™s for sissies. If you distill our process down you have Molding
and Finishing. We are usually about 98% on time with the molding but it
bottle necks at the finishing room. So the complaint is â€œNot enough
Peopleâ€ in finishing. Management wonâ€™t staff at any higher levels.
There really is no reason 2, 3 or 4.

So, let me guess ... Your finishing department probably goes from a light
load to swamped. When you are swamped you don't have enough people and
when the load is light management is pretty sure you could probably lay off
a few more people.

When you are swamped it takes twice as long therefore you're late on
deliveries.

You donâ€™t think we do Root Cause Analysis do you? NAHâ€¦
thatâ€™s for sissies. If you distill our process down you have Molding
and Finishing. We are usually about 98% on time with the molding but it
bottle necks at the finishing room. So the complaint is â€œNot enough
Peopleâ€ in finishing. Management wonâ€™t staff at any higher levels.
There really is no reason 2, 3 or 4.

This on going debate is always fun. Production has given me buckets of
â€œSPECIALâ€ circumstances where late is not late ( 2 + 2 = fish). Iâ€™ve
programmed ALL of their special circumstances into our on time report.
Guess what â€¦. it makes about a 2% difference in the numbers.

And then you get to what I'd love to see:

"Earliest allowable delivery date."

If I had a field for that AND I could get my sales people to ask the
question we could then schedule delivery to the earliest possible
delivery
date instead of the actual "DUE DATE".

Even if that's just a 5 day window it would give us a 5 days for "Stuff"
to
happen and, if God forbid, we actually do complete the job on time it
would
give us 5 days to play with in terms of "Optimizing" our deliveries. (
We
have our own trucks and it only pays to send them out when they are at
least
75% full ).

Just in time delivery to a fixed due date is a crap shoot at our
company.

Ah. the age old question what's on time shipping. Production says it's
a
moving target. There are two fields due date and ship by. Due date is
when
it needs to be at the customer location, ship by when it needs to ship.
I
created a calculated field that compared these two dates. If the ship
by is
greater than the due by then that is the new date target. You could
qualify
it even more with a VB check box or two in the ship header.

Greetings,

I created a report that identifies late and short shipments. We run
this
report each month and check it against our internal goals for
ontime/full
shipments. (driving value is ShipHead.ShipDate)

Today I learned that occasionally (few times a week) a shipment is ready
to
ship, but our main subcontractor (paint) is at capacity. They ask us to
delay for a day/weekend before making the sub-c shipment. Our customers
allow 7 days for sub contracting (after our manufacturing ship date), so
technically we still meet their ship date. But because we are delaying
shipments to our subcontractor (thus delaying the shiphead.shipdate), we
aren't meeting our manufacturing shipment dates.

I don't want to tell shipping to print out packing slips before the
shipment
leaves our dock for obvious reasons...does anyone have a work around to
this?
