Operation Specifications

Unfortunately, I'm just an engineering grunt and they don't let me have
access to fun stuff like that (probably for good reason!)

We are on 8.0, and from what I understand, reports aren't quite as sharable
because of the customizations we've done, so it probably wouldn't be much
use to you anyway.

Basically, to describe what I can see on the report, as long as your
materials are associated to operations, you just move the material under
the associated op, rather than listing them all at the beginning. And I'm
fairly certain this isn't just an 8.0 kind of thing, though that is when we
made the change.

Sorry I couldn't be more help...maybe someone else out there has a similar
traveler they can share...

Thanks for the responses to my initial email. I think it will be a while before we get to 8.0, but I will keep the dropdown options in mind when we get there.

Another thought we had was to set up a part class for specifications and add them at non stock part numbers that we could then set a material requirements on whatever operations that specification was needed on. As part numbers they would have revisions so they could be updated in one place and would carry forward to whatever job ops they were attached too. You could also then do a where used and see all the parts ops that use that specification.

Any thoughts on this approach?

Won't you go negative in inventory on the dummy part? If your production
control group/person is looking at availability of parts that could be an
issue.

This isn't a bad option--definitely preferrable over making your operations
the same as your procedures. We have done this with some documents (other
than our processes) that we use for things like inspection templates or
limit standards. It works pretty well.

For "materials" like these, we set the required quantity to "0.00001
fixed", so they don't show up on the job pick list (has to be at least 0.01
to show) or send requirements for purchase or manufacturing.

Another idea that might be helpful...we've reconfigured our job traveler to
list the "materials" under each operation that uses them, so that would be
more visual on the floor as to what would be needed for that operation.
