OT - 3com Switch - Lightning

Thanks for the info, everybody. Switch and surge protection arrived, are
installed, and UPS is on its way. -Gary

The UPS does give more protection. The power to the switch is always
consistent. Brown-outs occur when something huge gets turned on in a
building. There is a large power draw, and it takes the power grid a little
bit to recover. That drop in voltage is not good for any computer
equipment, but most stuff can handle it. A surge protector will not help,
but a UPS will. Also, power spikes can sometimes screw up network data, but
aren't usually enough to trip a surge protector. You may see screwy things
on that network and spend hours trying to troubleshoot them when it's just a
power issue. I like the peace of mind that comes from knowing the equipment
is running exactly as it is specified.

Nancy and Paul,

>From what you guys have said, and info I've found, it looks like this to
me:
If you need to protect from power fluctions only and don't care if the the
equipment goes out during power failure, get a surge supressor. If you need
continuity as well as power protection, get a UPS. Is it that basic? Or is
it more complicated than that? Does a UPS give more protection, due to the
battery buffering the power fluctuations?

Gary,
I have some small APC and Tripp Lite UPS. They both work fine and I can
still get batteries for some older units. In a nut shell a UPS works
something like this. The batteries soak up the electricty and outputs a
consistant level to the equipment, during surges or brown outs.
Different models come with different number of power plugs for the equipment
and can handle different amount of VA. How long they will run your equipment
during a power outage, depends on the battery size. You just need to size
one to your needs.
Hope this helps.
Nancy

And how is the surge protection on UPS's? -G

OK. I've looked around on the web. Prices go anywhere from $29.95 to a
couple hundred dollars for UPS's. Anyone have an opinion about which one to
buy - or not to buy? Does the price reflect the quality? Thanks for any
input. -Gary

I would definitely add a UPS. Look at your power requirements for the new
switch. A 500VA UPS should be more than enough and I only paid $80 for the
last one I bought (haven't checked prices in a while). $80 sounds like a
pretty cheap security blanket to me. Why take a chance?

All my high end switches are powered from UPS'es. Usually a decent UPS
comes with a replacement warranty if they inadvertently let a surge through

Replace the switch and save yourself the trouble down the road. Even
if it does work or you can get it to work other componets have been
stressed and will fail shortly. Insurance my cover replacement.

I need to consult the group intelligence once more. Anybody familiar with
troubleshooting switches after lightning strike? We had a few tornadoes
come through here last night. Lots of lightning strikes. Touchdown nearby.
I have a switch down in building across parking lot.

Buildings connected with fiber. Switch is 3Com 1100 12-port. All lights
both yellow and green on front panel are lit-up solid. No network
communication from anything in that building. I powered the switch off for
10 minutes and back on. No change. It looks like the switch is fried. I'm
bringing it back to main building to test it. How do I test for sure to
know if it's really done for?

You've already done most of what you can. I would have tried unplugging all
of the ethernet connections in the other building before powering up to see
if that fixed the issue with the lights (it may have been one damaged
computer causing all the collisions). In your shop, I would plug the switch
into your network and plug a different computer into the switch (laptop,
maybe). If that computer can get on the network, the switch is probably
okay. If the switch can't do that, it's probably toast.

Paul,

You caught me with my UPS's down. A wall outlet?? Sure, what's wrong with
that? ...Kidding. A wall outlet isn't my first choice. But when I asked
for money to buy a UPS when I first installed the switch, that idea was
nixed. All my other high-end switches have UPS's.

When I ordered my new switch today, I got an APC outlet surge protector for
it. Do you think surge protection is enough? It's apart from the main
building, where there no servers or absolutely critical IT equipment
located - wouldn't matter too much if we lose power over there for a short
period, but we can't afford new switches every time it rains. I thought
surge protection ought to be enough in this case. If I missed something in
that reasoning, somebody let me know, and I'll add a UPS to the order.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
I have some small APC and Tripp Lite UPS. They both work fine and I can
still get batteries for some older units. In a nut shell a UPS works
something like this. The batteries soak up the electricty and outputs a
consistant level to the equipment, during surges or brown outs.
Different models come with different number of power plugs for the equipment
and can handle different amount of VA. How long they will run your equipment
during a power outage, depends on the battery size. You just need to size
one to your needs.
Hope this helps.
Nancy

Gary,
Sorry to hear your UPS's got nixed. I was able to get those before
financial management was changed here and told me not to spend any money on
annual Vantage Maintenance renewals, I know your pain. :o

I highly recommend APC's line of products. They have a UPS to meet any
requirement, and act as surge suppressors as well. If you are protecting a
mere switch you could possibly be fine with a surge protector only. I have
more equipment in my switch cabinet, so I upped the rating of my protection
and got myself some battery power as a bonus.
See what your power requirements are, including future expansion. My APC's
last between 3-4 years...

Paul

Nancy and Paul,

From what you guys have said, and info I've found, it looks like this to me:

Usually a decent UPS
comes with a replacement warranty if they inadvertently let a surge through
and smoke some stuff connected to them. I know you didn't use a wall outlet
to power your switch right? ;)

In case you didn't, this would be an excellent opportunity to start building
that screaming network with 3Com Gigabit Ethernet managed rackmountable
switches you had been drooling over....

Replace the switch and save yourself the trouble down the road. Even
if it does work or you can get it to work other componets have been
stressed and will fail shortly. Insurance my cover replacement.

That's the basic difference, Gary. I am not sure how much better a UPS
works compared to surge suppressor during brown-out conditions in the power
supply. My rule of thumb when making a suppressor/UPS decision has always
been: If power would go down for a given piece of equipment, how much time
would be lost restoring the system back to where it was just before he power
outage? Figure in your hours, the user's hours, material costs, you get the
picture. Most of my engineers have small low end individual UPS'es.
Usually they only need a few minutes of uptime, just enough to save their
files and power down their machines.

There are two basic types of UPSes: Stand By and On-line. In a Stand-By
unit, AC power goes through some basic protection circuitry like a standard
surge suppressor and then directly powers the equipment. During a power
failure, it quickly switches over to the battery backup. With an on-line
UPS, the AC power is constantly converted to DC, then back to AC of the
correct frequency and voltage. They have zero switch over time during a
power failure, and offer "cleaner" power all the time (can correct for
frequency and waveform) and generally more surge protection.

The on-line type is better, but more expensive and less efficient (it
generates more heat, all the time). They were the hot setup years ago when
computer power supplies were much more picky about what you fed them. But
they're probably overkill for everything but the most critical equipment
these days.

We use a couple rack-mount 1400VA APC units for our servers, phone and
network gear. And small Tripp-Lite units for desktop machines. The power
is really flaky here, and they all get exercised a few times a month. We
also use a good quality (APC) surge-strip upstream off all the UPSes for
extra protection for the computers and the UPSes. In case of a minor
surge, I'd rather have a disposable $25 'strip to throw out than a $100 -
$800 UPS!
