OT - Active Directory Rollout

Sorry for the confusion, no 6.00 is not yet available. However, neither is
Windows 2003 Server. Both are beta programs and kept off our main
production network. However, both beta's seem to run very stable.

Vantage runs perfect on Windows Server 2003 <--- what they're calling it.

No problems here (Vantage 6.00.400 running a 1.5 GB database to a Windows XP

Off topic. I wondered if anyone could give me some guidance. I am
trying to get ready for AD rollout but I am concerned to go forward.
My users are very used to Novell and mapping to only their folders.
Now they will see all folders and that is a concern. They will be
upset and struggle to find their way. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Yes, when you create the share use this format

Share name: jdoe$

If the user directories are in for example d:\USER\jdoe you wouldn't create
a share on the "USER" directory, just the jdoe director. Then in your login
script, map to jdoe$ for that user. The dollar sign makes it a system
directory and not visible in the browser. Because the user has access to
the jdoe$ directory and is mapped to it they will notice no change. Set
security on the jdoe$ directory so that only that user and administrator has
access.
If you need any help feel free to contact me off list.

Your definitely not in this alone. We are also moving print sharing, file
sharing from Netware 4.11 to NT and then to AD. I have been looking for the
best solution to the same question. I still run over 20 pcs on Windows 98 so
I'm waiting on AD until they are upgraded.

The solution may be as simple as "Shares with your permission granted on NT
appear in My Network Places" automatically on XP or as messy as trying to
understand a "Distributed File System" under Active Directory.

I'm testing solutions to this now on a test network.

There is no reason you can't map drives with Win2k Server just like you did
with Novell. I have 98 and NT clients running just fine connecting to a
Windows 2000 AD infrastructure. Granted there are features of AD you can't
take advantage of until all your clients are Windows 2000 or better. In
the meantime you can still utilize AD's features to better manage the 2000
and XP boxes you do have.

OK, Here's the deal.

In Netware we mapped N: drive to a directory called HomeAndGroups.

Under HomeAndGroups we have a sub directory for each user (User1, User2,
User3, etc...) about 70 total.
Also directories for each department (Shipping, Accounting, Engineering,
Purchasing, etc.... )
Also directories for entities like (News Group, Corporate Group, Everyone
Group, QS9000 Group, etc...)

When you logged in and Mapped N: to HomeAndGroups you would just get what
you had permission to:
Example for Purchasing Manager:

Everyone Group
Purchasing Group
Corporate Group
News Group
Shipping Group
User30 (Own personal folder)

You don't have to look at all 90 folders.

In you solution I need to now map a drive letter for each item instead of
just one.
The basic difference is NT you view all.

I've heard that there are wonderful things that AD can do. But so far I
haven't heard about specifics of its advantages, what I have heard is of
interest to people of higher technical ability. What practicality is
there for a user who sees the pencil as the pinnacle of technology? Can
AD be learned "on the fly", if formal training is not an option? So far
my investigations answer this question as "NO". And once turned on you
cant practically turn it off again if you make a mistake.

True - the more Technically advanced you are the easier it will be. AD can be self learned if you take the right approach.

1. Read, find all the info you can on AD.
2. Join a MS Admin Group.
3. Create a test Server/Domain. One you can tear down and start over.
4. Wait for Windows 2003. New version of AD, which is not 100% compatible with AD 1.0 (supposed to be released in April).

For the original post:

AD can accomplish what you wish. Novell has a right called "File Scan" that is "off" by default. MS has the Right "List Folder Contents" which is "on" by default.

Thanks.

I was wondering if anyone has loaded Vantage onto a Windows.net/Windows 2003
server or whatever they are calling it today? I have Windows.net running as
my print server and I really like it. Just haven't tried playing with more
vital applications on it.

True - the more Technically advanced you are the easier it will be. AD can
be self learned if you take the right approach.

1. Read, find all the info you can on AD.
2. Join a MS Admin Group.
3. Create a test Server/Domain. One you can tear down and start over.
4. Wait for Windows 2003. New version of AD, which is not 100% compatible
with AD 1.0 (supposed to be released in April).

For the original post:

AD can accomplish what you wish. Novell has a right called "File Scan" that
is "off" by default. MS has the Right "List Folder Contents" which is "on"
by default.

There is no reason you can't map drives with Win2k Server just like you
did
with Novell. I have 98 and NT clients running just fine connecting to a
Windows 2000 AD infrastructure. Granted there are features of AD you
can't
take advantage of until all your clients are Windows 2000 or better. In
the meantime you can still utilize AD's features to better manage the
2000
and XP boxes you do have.

Your definitely not in this alone. We are also moving print sharing,
file
sharing from Netware 4.11 to NT and then to AD. I have been looking for
the
best solution to the same question. I still run over 20 pcs on Windows
98
so
I'm waiting on AD until they are upgraded.

The solution may be as simple as "Shares with your permission granted on
NT
appear in My Network Places" automatically on XP or as messy as trying
to
understand a "Distributed File System" under Active Directory.

I'm testing solutions to this now on a test network.
