OT Adobe & Distiller

If all you are doing is looking at emailing Vantage forms as PDF files, then
you can get PDF software that works as a printer driver way cheaper than
Adobe. I've used Win2PDF for quite some time and I really like it. Very
simple to install and use. The biggest benefit is the price. You can
download a trial copy from http://www.win2pdf.com/ <http://www.win2pdf.com/>

The Distiller Server that you are looking at for $5000 is the version of the
software that can be installed on a server and shared like any other
printer. If you purchase the approx. $250 Acrobat you get both Distiller
and Acrobat drivers. Distiller can be configured to take an entire
directory of files and convert them, but I have found this to be less than
desirable. All of the files have to be PostScript for automatic conversion
to take place. Sadly there are many products that output PostScript very
well. You can read up on Distiller at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrdis/main.html
<http://www.adobe.com/products/acrdis/main.html>

Hope this helps you out and let me know if I can be of more assistance.

This is in regards to a previous discussion - faxing/emailing Vantage forms.
I have some questions about using Acrobat and Distiller with Vantage.
If I understand right Distiller is a separate Abobe product. I have seen
Distiller referred to as Distiller Server, is this the product, at around
$5000, USD? I know you can just use Adobe Acrobat without the Distiller, but
was interested in the Distiller option.

Micheal,
I would like to get the tips for printing from AutoCad. We make precision
cutting tools, especially diamond tools, and have a lot of drawings going
back and forth.
Thank you for your help.

We got the distiller and printer driver with plain old Acrobat for about
$240. I did notice that in the install of Acrobat 5.0 it does not install
the printer by default. You have to do a Custom intall and check mark it.

We also found we have the distiller/printer available on the driver CD for
our HP ScanJet 5300C scanner. So we have installed this on several PCs to
allow people to print to PDF files.

Nancy,

I'm just using the distiller that comes with 'plain old Acrobat'. I've
heard of Distiller Server, but never used it.

Here is what one of our engineers had to say on the subject :-

We used to print to distiller using the "Default System Printer" in AutoCAD.

AutoCAD has its own postscript driver which can be set up through the Menu:
File/Printer setup. The advantage of this driver is that it allows you to
print to a full size Acrobat sheet (e.g. A1, B0) instead of the limited
sizes that the standard Adobe driver offers. We had to experiment with the
driver configuration so that a "^Z was not appended" and a "^D was
appended".

Also check that your pen settings are the correct widths and that your
colours are what you want (usually 7 - black).

The end result has been compact file sizes that give the recipient adequate
information, without giving away more than we intend.
