OT - Barcode Scanner hardware

Really?
No, ours is working fine, but as I said before I'd rather purchase Opticon next time or now that I am comfortable with scanners get
a little more sophisticated ones that can be programmed to do more functions.

Hi,
I didn't see any specific information in the archives...

I have zero (as in zippo, zilch, nada, nil, none) knowledge about barcode scanners, but wouldn't you know that I was asked what we was available on the market for the following:

A portable barcode scanner, PC based, but that you could detach to carry through the warehouse as it collects data from barcodes (ie. Part Numbers) and then plugs (or via wireless) back into a PC.

1. What is available for something like that, and what would be a rough cost? Any recommendations for vendors or brands?
2. What is involved in setting up barcode printing in Vantage (besides printing the barcode itself)? I've seen a lot of threads on this list about barcode fonts, etc. Does Vantag barcoding work out of the box, or is there a bunch of configuring that I'm going to have to do to start using barcoding in our warehouse?

Thanks.

Can you tell me anything about them? Do they plug into a PC via Serial Port? How expensive are they?
Do you use them with Vantage Barcodes?

Just to check for ballpark prices on equipment and see what's out there I
usually go to www.systemid.com <http://www.systemid.com> for SystemID
Warehouse. I get their catalog so I often just flip thru that. Once I have
an idea what I'm looking for I usually buy from a local distributor that I
like.

Printing was extremely easy. I use the Dataworks Code 39 font (what Vantage
uses) 90% of the time. A few customers wanted other formats on box labels
so I purchased the WASP font pack. From RB or Crystal the Code 39 barcodes
need an asterik on each end of the item which can make numeric fields a
little trickier (convert to string, format to keep leading zero) but that's
as complicated as it gets. Printing to labels was about the same as
printing to a laser printer. There are tons of special codes for formatting
labels "inside" the label printer (store the format and send just the data)
but it is far easier to format with RB or Crystal and just send like to any
other printer.

I think I know who that was posting about Symbol brand scanners and he
recommended them to me as well. We tried the Symbol scanners and they work
very well. The model we tried plugs inline with the keyboard using a
"wedge". The thing to watch with the top Symbol scanners (and some other
brands as well) is that they draw more power than the keyboard connection
can handle, so they require their own external power supply. Not a big deal,
but something you might need to plan for.

We use our scanners for data collection into Vantage and some other things
as well. I found that the Symbol scanner worked very well in testing, even
reading the oil-covered travellers from our shop floor.

Admittedly in the end, we went with PSC over Symbol due to a combination of
availability and price. However, I would suggest that anyone looking for a
scanner try a model from Symbol.

As for prices, here's a couple of places I usually check:

http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?grp=BCD
http://www.idwarehouse.com/symbol.htm

Brian
We have a couple of Opticon CCD scanners (~$120.00 EA.) in Shipping department. No problems at all for the past three years. One
Wasp CCD scanner in Stockroom (~$220). Had it for two years, no problems also. Both of the brands are about the same so next time
I'll purchase Opticon and save money. These are connected to the keyboard cable with a "Y" connector and they act like a keyboard
emulator. If the scanner reads let's say letter "B" then it types letter "B" where the cursor blinks on the screen.
In shipping we use them to create new Packing Slip Header, when Vantage opens the program the cursor is in the "Order:" text box,
where we scan the Sales Order Number. After entering the number you can program the scanner to add "TAB" or "RETURN" at the end.
What concerns portable scanners I would love to hear from others if they have solutions how to use them with Vantage. My guess
would be you would need a laptop running Vantage, connected to wireless network. May be then you can make quantity adjustments
directly into Vantage.

Troy,

I found Symbol Spark LS1006 scanners for a good price at the link below.
They are keyboard wedges which means they plug directly into your
keyboard port on the computer and then you plug the keyboard into the
built-in adapter. Purchased 10 of these for shop floor usage - work
very well.

You don't have to straighten out a paperclip and reset that Wasp every month or so?

:)

Man, I sure did, drove me crazy. of the 6 originally purchased, 5 were warrantied out within the first year!
