[OT] Blackberries and Email

The data is sent to the blackberry via the cellular network just like a text
message on a cell phone. There is no Internet access involved on the
receiving end.

President of company asked me to research getting Blackberries for him and key managers. Mainly for remote access to email without lugging around a laptop and finding a WAP. We are currently doing Oultook Web Access. Can these type sof units access web pages? What other "methods" of allowing access to our Exchange server would there be? Forwarding to email service on the unit via Outlook wizard (like out of office)?

Any other issues or "gotchas" to be aware of with these? He knows the service side might be pricey and there would probably be term contracts in exchange for the units. Are straight out purchased units better than vendor provided ones?

Any tips would be much appreciated.

I have just gotten one and I was forwarding my e-mail to my Blackberry from my desktop... this doesn't work very well because you can't open attachments. I also could not get internet access without the server software (at least that is what I was told -- and I couldn't make it work). So...... I would recommend getting the Blackberry server software. I have purchased the server software, but I have not installed it yet (next Friday is the install date). I'll let you know how it goes when I do it next week.

Does the server software run on the Blackberry itself or within your office? If office then how do you get Internet access when away - like when visiting customers or in the airport?

Thanks,

Sorry, should have done this first since I have no clue how these work. Just visited Blackberry web site to get educated. But any updates on "real world" usage would be great.

Todd:

I have several Blackberry users within my organization including myself.
If you're already running Exchange in house setting up a Blackberry
Enterprise Server, this is the software that allows mail to be forwarded
to the RIM device from Exchange (and should be installed on a separate
box), is relatively painless. Once you've got it up and running adding
users is easy and is all integrated with Exchange (i.e., you add users
from the GAL). There are wireless fees per device (for each RIM device)
and varies by Vendor. Depending on how many hand held devices you
purchase you may get a break on the Enterprise Server Licensing as well.
In terms of web access on handheld device we're not using these devices
for internet access only email. We're using T-Mobile for wireless
access and have purchased RIM's from various sources since we started
using these devices. I got a better deal from CDW on the Black Berry
Enterprise server licensing that comes in packs of 5 I believe.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Blackberries and Email

President of company asked me to research getting Blackberries for him
and key managers. Mainly for remote access to email without lugging
around a laptop and finding a WAP. We are currently doing Oultook Web
Access. Can these type sof units access web pages? What other
"methods" of allowing access to our Exchange server would there be?
Forwarding to email service on the unit via Outlook wizard (like out of
office)?

Any other issues or "gotchas" to be aware of with these? He knows the
service side might be pricey and there would probably be term contracts
in exchange for the units. Are straight out purchased units better than
vendor provided ones?

Any tips would be much appreciated.
