OT-Celeron PC's

Todd,
I can confirm there will be no V7. The reason for the skip that I have
been told is to bring all Epicor .NET products out with the same version
number. V7 will just be skipped.

We have a lot of Celeron 500Mhz PCs - mostly shop floor data
collection but some office. They work fine for Vantage. Even some of
the old PII-266 work OK for DC.

But if I had to buy new client PCs now I think I would buy
regular P4 processors - even at a much slower than current 2+Ghz levels.
There is just not that much difference in price about three steps down
on the CPU curve. Plus with continuing with the Celeron type I would be
worried about future compatability with Vantage 8.0. The support web
site has a P-III 600Mhz has the absolute minimum for 8.0 (with 512MB RAM
and 1GB disk free) but recommends a 2.4Ghz P4 or higher. Also 8.0 will
require Win2K or Win-XP so what they require is also a factor.

I figure I have 18 months to be ready for Vantage 8.0 and in
that time our Celerons and anything else slower than 1Ghz are going to
get replaced. 8.0 is going to be a huge infrastructure leap -
especially with the .Net considerations - one reason I'm view
Perspectives this year as vital to my strategic planning.

BTW - There is (or will be) no Vantage 7.0 - they skipped that
number because "Sonoma" is such a big change.

I recall discussion on Celeron PC's awhile back, but the search did
not bring up anything. I'm looking for pros and cons. Do any of you
use, or recommend using or not using Celeron processor PC's when all
they are used for is Vantage, Excel and Word? I recall some say that
it is fine as long as they are not being used for CAD etc. Will I
loose speed? If so, this is not an option. We currently have
Vantage 5.0 on an old slow 500 mhz Win NT server with hopes of
upgrading (approx 40 users, 100 ethernet switch). We use our
workstations until they croak with no hope of repair or no longer
meet Vantage specs. We are looking to replace some and I want to
make sure I am not slowing down the user nor shortening the life span
of whatever workstations we get. I have an HP 220 model in mind.
We've purchased a few with Pentium processors in the past for primary
users, now I would like to get better pricing to go with quantity.
Currently, the workstations we have in place that have not been
replaced consist of 500 mhz, 266mhz, 233mhz, 200 mhz (even a
120mhz!). I am aware that we will need to replace all these and/or
use a Terminal server. I am not up to date on specs for Vantage 7.0-
8.0.
Thanks for all input!
