Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Changing Windows AD Controller
I know this is way off-topic but I know there are some helpful experts out
there!
We currently have a main fileserver which is also the primary AD controller
on the network (also primary DNS, WINS, DHCP, etc.). This is mainly for
historical reasons and, as the load in increasing on the server it is
starting to struggle.
I plan to set up a new server to take over AD duties, etc. and dedicate the
existing server to being a file & print member-only server. Rather a lot of
kit on site has the existing server IP address hard-coded for DNS, WINS,
etc. so I am going to have to assign that IP address to the new server
machine and assign a new address to the existing file server. We have
another server that is currently secondary AD, DNS and WINS as well as a
whole host of other duties.
The challenge is going to be how to handle the address changing without
screwing up AD and DNS for the company. I plan to do the following:
1. set up the new server on a new IP address as an AD controller and allow
everything to synchronise 2. transfer the FSMO master roles to the new
server 3. demote the existing file server to domain member then disconnect
from network 4. change the IP address of the new server and manually go into
the DNS and remove the obsolete entries and get the server to re-register
itself 5. change the IP address of the old server while disconnected from
the network then reboot and rejoin the network.
Are there any pitfalls in my plan, or things to watch out for?
