We're moving more users to Android and have a couple of iDevices in the mix
as well.

As stated above, app store purchases are on the user and can be expensed if
appropriate.

We provide Total Equipment Coverage (VZW) on smart phones which gives you
extended warranty and accidental breakage coverage.

If a user is a habitual offender for losing or breaking devices (and isn't
related to the owners) they run the risk of being taken off the company plan
and they will be responsible for obtaining their own device and plan if it
is a requirement for their job. They will be allowed to expense the monthly
cost up to what the company would pay on the corporate account.

How are your companies handling the purchasing of Appstore items on company provided devices. I'm in the middle of upgrading a lot of the company phones to Android phones and this has been a question that popped up.

Also, the another question that came up was "what happens if I break my phone". What is your company doing about replacement? Is the employee or the company responsible for the replacement?

Any insight would be helpful on this and I am suppose to come up with a policy for the company...

Brad,

My last company was an iDevice company and it was handled like this. The company supplied the device and the service. The user was responsible for setting up an account with apple using their personal info/credit card. The user was also responsible for backing up their purchases on the device in case of failure. The user was responsible for any overages on the service account unless they could be shown to be company related. The company covered breakage on the first device after that the user was responsible for a percentage, unless the breakage happened because of some type of workplace misshap that was deemed to be accidental and or unavoidable

You break it / loose it you replace it. You pay for your own apps

Hi Brad,

The majority of our mobile users are sales reps and a mobile phone is a
required tool that we supply for them.

All apps are purchased by them on personal accounts and they can expense
one if they believe it is work related (this has never happened).

If they break a phone, we replace it with no questions asked. Although,
I will probe to find out to satisfy my curiosity. We have never had a
repeat offender who broke their phone more than once per contact period.
If we did though, we would start to purchase lower and cheaper models,
probably recertified ones, until their mobile number was eligible for an
phone upgrade.

Part of the decision on who to define your policy depends on why you're
given an employee a mobile phone. If, like in my case, it is a mandatory
tool need to do their job then you might have a different policy than if
you are given a mobile phone just so you can reach them.
