OT - Computer/Network Name

Jim,

Ignore the advice to change the SID, if doesn't apply and will instead
set you off on a new adventure. All that is happening is that the PC
is attempting to use the local account to login instead of the
domain account.

Check two things:

Control Panel -> Users Accounts -> Advanced ->
Put a check mark in "Require Users to press CTRL+ALT+DEL"
(This will force the display of the logon dialog, where the
local or domain context can be selected)
(If this is XP Home, congratulations. To get to the above
location, make sure you are and Administrator. From the
"Run" dialog, type "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2" and click OK)

REGEDIT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
WindowsNT
CurrentVersion
WinLogon
Examine the keys "DefaultUserName", "DefaultPassword" and
"DefaultDomainName". Edit as required, then reboot.

have fun,
john

Subject: [Vantage] OT - Computer/Network Name
I am using Windows XP on our network on a few test machines. When
setting up XP I called the machines and their user User and User2. I
did this thinking that it would be generic setup and then when I need to
assign it to a person, I could go in as User and create a new account as
the specific new person (keeping User as an administrator on that
machine). It all worked great until I needed to link up to the network.
I added User and User1 to the userbase on the server. I have now
created the new account for the particular user, but it still wants to
connect to the network as user. I scanned the registry for user and
found nothing that seemed to fit my trouble. So basically, when I log
that machine in as tommyf (the new user) it logs in to the machine and
can't connect to the network because of the name conflict (I am
guessing) but when I browse out to the network I can find all drives and
printers I need. I also tried using the connect as feature to have
tommyf connect as user, but this didn't work either. I am guessing
there is some .ini file sitting somewhere telling the machine that its
name is user and I need to find that file and edit it to tommyf.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim MacMillan

You might try the "New SID" utility these guys offer. I used to use it
after cloning NT 4 machines. You problem sounds similar.

I had the same trouble and found that the computer was not joining the
domain, just a workgroup
