OT - Current Events

One thing that applies some of the time: We lose one leg of power quite
often here. That means that some of the circuits are dead. So I keep a
stack of extension cords handy to plug switches, fax machines, etc. (stuff
not on a UPS) as well as some PCs that are down.

Of course this doesn't apply when all goes down, but that is much less
frequent for us.

Jim,

I take what I think (hope) are the usual precautions for power outs. But
here are a few little things that I missed, that were just enough to be a
small pain in the outage. Anyone else feel free to add to this list. We
could end up with with a very good ISO document here.

A flashlight might have been nice when the lights went out (no windows in
my
office). And later last night, unplugging everyone's PC's, monitors,
printers and misc equipment in the pitch black was enjoyable (now I know I
can do this job with my eyes closed).

Server monitor and KVM switch wasn't plugged in to UPS (it's in a
different
part of the computer room from the servers). Servers are on automated
shutdown, so I didn't think I would need that. Sometimes these things
don't
go as planned (for), and you need to make a slight adjustment (the Windows
interface is really hard to use without the monitor).

My workstation not currently UPS'd. Never know when you might need to
access some of your carefully documented procedures and info in a hurry.

Didn't label power cords, outlets and which servers plugged into which
UPS.
While poking around to trace the cords, I found some sharp objects I had
misplaced some time ago (Yipe! Oooooh, that's where I put that).

The 3rd server I added recently doesn't have a UPS shutdown sequence like
my
others. The other servers that do have autoshutdown enabled didn't have
enough time allowed to closeout programs gracefully (more things going on
now than when I set it up).

Carry my boss's home phone number on me from now on. Matter of fact, I
think I'll throw a hard-copy of an emergency numbers list in my truck
glove
compartment (and add the power company's phone number to that list).

Remember correctly which keys fit what doors.

Keep a battery radio handy - if it is the end of the world, do I really
need
to worry about the network?

Write a letter to my congresspeople, and ask them why it doesn't take any
more than that to shut down half the country.

While these items are not exactly deal-breakers, they added just enough of
the element of surprise to keep the evening interesting.

Sorry, Guys, but this is just one of those that I haven't been able to find
in ANY hoax site. If you are able to, then please let me know.

>Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2003 21:10:46 -0700 (PDT)
>From: geo predictions <geopredictions@...>
>Subject: Future Events- Pass this on please

Numerous geophysical events have occurred in the last 7 months, including
the Mexico & Japan earthquakes, the tornado outbreak in early May and the
giant hail event in Nebraska in June. Based on correlative and periodicity
studies, numerous and intense events are forecast for the very near future.
These studies include planetary alignments and patterns.
On Saturday, August 23, 2003 there will be a climax to a pattern which
occurs ONLY ONCE EVERY 2,000 YEARS.
Please refer to: geocities.com/geopredictions/index.html for prediction
table. The table was placed on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, two days BEFORE
the earthquake in Greece, which was one of only 6 earthquake locations
forecast at that time.
Of utmost concern to Geopredictions is the possibility of several
non-criminal, non-terrorist CRITICALITY ACCIDENTS at worldwide nuclear
facilities. It is suggested that world nuclear powers take every precaution
to avert such events. A simple solution is to POWER DOWN during the high
risk window of August 10 through the end of September. If there is one
single criticality accident during this time, it should be seen as a signal
that more accidents are soon to follow.
Please work to prevent a criticality accident by contacting your
governmental head and also the UN. If every nation were to cooperate in
this TEMPORARY SHUT-DOWN, a catastrophe could be averted. Please pass this
message to international friends and acquaintances. The next few potential
criticality accidents can be avoided, if all governments with nuclear power
will simply cease nuclear power generation for 4-6 weeks.
There is also a threat of steam boiler explosions. Please recall the recent
boiler explosion on the cruise ship in Florida. This possibility actually
doubles the threat at nuclear facilities.
This letter is being initiated on 8/14/03, immediately after the power
outage of the Northeast and the earthquake in Greece. Please note that the
government was quick to point out that the blackout WAS NOT terrorist-
induced. This is very believable because of the rare planetary pattern.
A disaster in Bangladesh is of great concern, as this country is already
receiving the normal Monsoon floods. Greatly increased flooding is
predicted which could displace hundreds of thousands. This scenario is also
predicted for India and China.
Severe storms of all types are predicted for the US during the high risk
window of August 10 through late September. Tornado outbreaks should begin
immediately. These outbreaks are predicted to include numerous F4 and F5
tornadoes. Highest risk dates for the most extreme tornado outbreaks are
Aug 18 & 27. Please refer to the prediction table, since tornado events
will be almost continuous during this period.
Greatest earthquake concerns are Los Angeles, Israel and Tokyo.
Highest risk dates for worldwide earthquakes are August 12 and August
23-27. The table lists inclusive dates since numerous earthquakes are
forecast worldwide. Japan will likely sustain two major hits- E HONSHU &
TOKYO.
Tropical storms are of great concern. Where these hit, particularly in the
US, Tens of miles of beaches are predicted to wash away, while new real
estate will appear where there once was only shallow sea water.
The SE Asian island arc will have the greatest chance of a moderate to
strong eruption on August 23-27. Semeru on Java is the most likely
candidate for a large eruption although there should be an overall increase
in volcanism worldwide during August and September.
Giant and/or voluminous Hail will hit specific localities in the Great
Plains and the Midwest. There will also be numerous other instances
worldwide.
Watch for explosions at explosives facilities and explosions and fires at
chemical plants and oil refineries. The threat here can be avoided by
reducing operations during the high risk window of August 10 - end of
September.
At time of publishing correlations and periodicities were calculated only
through about 9-7-03. More predictions will be added as calculations proceed.
Total worldwide losses for August and September are predicted to be at
least $100 billion.
The dead give away is "Pass this on please."

So you are learning the lessons we learned two years ago when the Great
State of California decided to implement Rolling 2 hour blackouts. I have a
stack of 8 APC 2200's (can't move them with a forklift) ganged together than
keeps all 6 of my servers purring for 4 hours.

Jim,

I take what I think (hope) are the usual precautions for power outs. But
here are a few little things that I missed, that were just enough to be a
small pain in the outage. Anyone else feel free to add to this list. We
could end up with with a very good ISO document here.

A flashlight might have been nice when the lights went out (no windows in my
office). And later last night, unplugging everyone's PC's, monitors,
printers and misc equipment in the pitch black was enjoyable (now I know I
can do this job with my eyes closed).

Server monitor and KVM switch wasn't plugged in to UPS (it's in a different
part of the computer room from the servers). Servers are on automated
shutdown, so I didn't think I would need that. Sometimes these things don't
go as planned (for), and you need to make a slight adjustment (the Windows
interface is really hard to use without the monitor).

My workstation not currently UPS'd. Never know when you might need to
access some of your carefully documented procedures and info in a hurry.

Didn't label power cords, outlets and which servers plugged into which UPS.
While poking around to trace the cords, I found some sharp objects I had
misplaced some time ago (Yipe! Oooooh, that's where I put that).

The 3rd server I added recently doesn't have a UPS shutdown sequence like my
others. The other servers that do have autoshutdown enabled didn't have
enough time allowed to closeout programs gracefully (more things going on
now than when I set it up).

Carry my boss's home phone number on me from now on. Matter of fact, I
think I'll throw a hard-copy of an emergency numbers list in my truck glove
compartment (and add the power company's phone number to that list).

Remember correctly which keys fit what doors.

Keep a battery radio handy - if it is the end of the world, do I really need
to worry about the network?

Write a letter to my congresspeople, and ask them why it doesn't take any
more than that to shut down half the country.

While these items are not exactly deal-breakers, they added just enough of
the element of surprise to keep the evening interesting.

Gary,
I would be interested in what you learned. It might be helpful to the rest
of us. We had a 20 minute power failure the other day that was due to human
error at a substation. About the time I got the servers shut down the power
came back on!

Shirley,

Glad everything's OK there. We ended up fine too this morning. And I ended
up with a short list of things that I want to have different by the next
time the power goes down. Another learning opportunity. Sure glad for
those UPS's.

Just for everyone's info, we are digging out in Cleveland, water is
being trucked in from Buffalo and Columbus, Cleveland citizens were calm
through the event. I sat on the front porch last night and counted the
millions of stars in the sky. It was beautiful. Power came back about
5:30 AM. (sigh) back to business.
