One thing that applies some of the time: We lose one leg of power quite
often here. That means that some of the circuits are dead. So I keep a
stack of extension cords handy to plug switches, fax machines, etc. (stuff
not on a UPS) as well as some PCs that are down.
Of course this doesn't apply when all goes down, but that is much less
frequent for us.

Jim,
I take what I think (hope) are the usual precautions for power outs. But
here are a few little things that I missed, that were just enough to be a
small pain in the outage. Anyone else feel free to add to this list. We
could end up with with a very good ISO document here.
A flashlight might have been nice when the lights went out (no windows in
my
office). And later last night, unplugging everyone's PC's, monitors,
printers and misc equipment in the pitch black was enjoyable (now I know I
can do this job with my eyes closed).
Server monitor and KVM switch wasn't plugged in to UPS (it's in a
different
part of the computer room from the servers). Servers are on automated
shutdown, so I didn't think I would need that. Sometimes these things
don't
go as planned (for), and you need to make a slight adjustment (the Windows
interface is really hard to use without the monitor).
My workstation not currently UPS'd. Never know when you might need to
access some of your carefully documented procedures and info in a hurry.
Didn't label power cords, outlets and which servers plugged into which
UPS.
While poking around to trace the cords, I found some sharp objects I had
misplaced some time ago (Yipe! Oooooh, that's where I put that).
The 3rd server I added recently doesn't have a UPS shutdown sequence like
my
others. The other servers that do have autoshutdown enabled didn't have
enough time allowed to closeout programs gracefully (more things going on
now than when I set it up).
Carry my boss's home phone number on me from now on. Matter of fact, I
think I'll throw a hard-copy of an emergency numbers list in my truck
glove
compartment (and add the power company's phone number to that list).
Remember correctly which keys fit what doors.
Keep a battery radio handy - if it is the end of the world, do I really
need
to worry about the network?
Write a letter to my congresspeople, and ask them why it doesn't take any
more than that to shut down half the country.
While these items are not exactly deal-breakers, they added just enough of
the element of surprise to keep the evening interesting.

Gary,
I would be interested in what you learned. It might be helpful to the rest
of us. We had a 20 minute power failure the other day that was due to
human
error at a substation. About the time I got the servers shut down the
power
came back on!

Shirley,
Glad everything's OK there. We ended up fine too this morning. And I
ended
up with a short list of things that I want to have different by the next
time the power goes down. Another learning opportunity. Sure glad for
those UPS's.

Just for everyone's info, we are digging out in Cleveland, water is
being trucked in from Buffalo and Columbus, Cleveland citizens were calm
through the event. I sat on the front porch last night and counted the
millions of stars in the sky. It was beautiful. Power came back about
5:30 AM. (sigh) back to business.
