Subject: [Vantage] OT-Data collection terminals

After searching the archive and reading many posts, I just want to get some
up-to-date information on this subject.

We are evaluating our methods of data collection in our shop. Currently we
are running PCs on an Ethernet network and only using them for shift times.
We are interested in making the move to bar-coding. Some sort of hand held
data collection terminal is also needed for the warehouse. I am wondering
what people's experiences have been with PCs and bar-coding as well as
products similar to what Computerwise offers. What is the price comparison
of these data terminal keypads VS. standalone PCs? Would going to TT5's be
a step backward and adding bar coding be a step forward? We are running
version 5.1. Contact me directly if needed.

TIA

We scan bar codes just fine using PCs and a scanner then plugs "in-line"
with the keyboard. Basically it has the "keyboard wedge" built into the
scanner gun. I really like the simplicity of using cheap PCs and doing my
own maintenance and it gives me a place to rotate old office PCs to as newer
ones freshen the pool. We splurged ($279?) on Welch-Allyn scanners but they
are super rugged and true survivors so far.
