Ot Dell Optoplex overheat

John,
I have about 20 of these machine everyone did the same thing. My problem
was the cap's on the motherboard. Dell had a batch off bad capacitors and
they all are going bad. If you look at the cap's on the motherboard you
will notice they have a slight bump. You have to look close because it is
hard to see some of them. I would bet that is the problem.

Have a Nice Day,

Does it give any POST beep code at all or nothing?
Do the fans spin up or does the hard drive spin up at all?
If neither I would suspect a bad motherboard since I've seen the same and a
new MB fixed it.

If you do get a beep code there are plenty of web sites with charts for
looking up what they mean (like a long and three shorts being an unseated
video card).

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to troubleshhot an Optoplex gx270 that will not boot.
I replaced the power supply.
I replaced all the fans.
I checked the cpu.
I reapplied the thermal stuff between chip and heatsink.
I am lost.
I checked Dell's wonderful techsupport.

Anyone have an idea.

Thanks,

Any activity at all? Any beep codes or video display? Probably the system
board. Have you removed all cards but the video card?

Hi Todd,

The fans spin, the hard drive spins up and starts windows. The progress
bar gets about 80% of the way when the machine shuts down. I have
changed the hard drive to see if it was a virus. Same thing happens.

Thanks for your help,

Can you boot in safe mode? If not it begins to sound like bad memory. Have you swapped that from a good machine as a test?

Hi Todd,

I have tried safemode and the same thing.
I have swapped out memory and the same thing.

At this point changing the motherboard may be the best answer.
I think I may mount this one on the wall, framed with a Dell Logo.

Thanks,

John,

This is almost 100% motherboard. Dell (along with several other
manufacturers) had some bad capacitors get into their supply chain
over the past couple of years. This affected all the Optiplex
models. Look at the large canister caps around the processor. See if
any of them have "pushed up" tops instead of being flat. If so,
that's your problem. There are several articles on the web about
this. Google for optiplex and capacitor.

John,

Ron is exactly right - we had the same issue last year on about half a
dozen GX270s. Call Dell and have them send out a tech rep with a new
motherboard for you.

have fun,
john

Thanks to you all,

I spoke with Dell. Went through their 10,000 questions and they will
send out a replacement board.
