OT: Digital Camera Repair

Yeah. We liked the floppy capability. Not only was it convenient, it prevented people from taking huge pictures and sending them through e-mail or saving them to the network. Since the camera I was replacing was replaced only a year ago we went with something cheaper and perhaps less breakable?

DAZZLE DT USB 2 COMPACTFLASH READER

I also bought another flashcard. We will see how it works.

I have to agree with you about the convenience of the floppy disk
capability. We have two Mavicas here. Keep in mind that the newer
Mavica (FD200) has both floppy and memory stick capability and runs
around $300.

We have two Sony Mavica Cameras (floppy disk) that are broken. One has a blank screen the other says format error. Both Cameras are well out of warranty.

Has anyone had a repair done on a digital camera? What did it cost? Is some place cheaper than another? Is my best option the Sony repair department?

Ran into this with our son's digital camera. He took it from an air conditioned hotel room to a very hot humid day in New York City. Must have been condensation because the screen blinked a few times and blanked out. It has not worked since, even after allowing to dry. When we checked about repair the consensus was...it's cheaper to buy a new one and the new one will have more or better features than the old one. So we did....but got the extended warranty because the cameras are just to fragile and tempermental. One of the few items it seems to pay to get one on.

For work we are now recording on memory sticks. Several of our new PCs have USB floppy drives with slots for various memory cards used by cameras.

better off buying a new camera especially since those use floppies for
storage!

We use the floppies because when our people travel it is easy to find a PC with a floppy drive. Not everyone has the latest and greatest in regards to PCs. We do have one that records to a CD. That has also worked well for us.

We have a memory stick reader from Dazzle-IO that fits into a USB port ($29?). It's about the size of my thumb. So pics can be loaded on any PC with a USB port, no special driver to load. Means the camera can have few or no moving parts - more reliable.

I have seen an adapter somewhere that looks like a floppy but has a flash
memory slot in it and adapts for that very purpose.

Wow! My mother in-law has an old Mavica. Only one I've ever seen.

On one that old, I'd say replace it. About the only thing going for it is
it's less attractive to thieves. I've seen really cheap ones with no
removable memory card for under $100. I'd bet the pix quality is probably
better than the Mavica.

My wife has a Pentax digital bought in 2001. The zoom lens quit
working; actually, I think the mechanism was ok, just the switch
malfunctioned. She found a local shop that specializes in fixing
them. She took it too them with a "do not exceed $120 total cost" repair
order. Get 'er working again for only $80 :) So if you can find a local
place (no shipping costs) they aren't necessarily throw-aways.
