OT Exchange 2003

Again, if you use IMAP as the account type, you don't have the issue of
the mail getting "POPped" off of the Exchange Server...Candidly, you
don't even have to provide "real" account settings if your SMTP virtual
server in EX2003 is set up to allow relay from clients on the local
network -- i.e. you can completely "fake" all of the account header
information and simply use Exchange's SMTP service to send mail and
masquerade as any user you want. You could even send mail as
mickey@... if you were so inclined! (Of course, you'd never get a
reply, but in Todd's instance, his users would provide a legal return
address of user@... or what have you....)

I administer the IT Operations for five companies. We all use one of two
MS Exchange 2003 Servers and each company has it's own domain name. We
have a centralized accounting department that accounts for all five
companies as well. One of our companies (Company A) manufactures goods
that are used by two of the other companies(Companies B & C). As a
result Company A's customers can be competitors of Company B & C. For
this reason, management at Company A does not want it's customers to
know of their relationship with Company B & C. So onto the problem....

Often times our accounting department needs to communicate via e-mail
with customers regardless of company. What I need to do is develop a way
that they can change the domain name of their sending address to the
appropriate company. I currently have them all set up with an e-mail
address for each company. Like todd@..., todd@... or
todd@.... This allows them to receive mail from customers with
no problem, however, their primary e-mail address always shows on
messages they send. I have tried changing the FROM field to read a
different address but that doesn't work. Does anyone know how I can
configure these clients to send mail showing that shows as being "from"
a domain other than their Primary Address? Ideally it is user selected
at time the mail is composed?

Thanks
Todd @ Company B...or was it C?

Todd,

Just went through this myself a few months back.

My Outlook client has 3 different email addresses associated with it. One
for SBC-Yahoo, one for my own domain name, and one for a hotmail account.

When you want to send an email - on the button bar - there should be an
option for "ACCOUNTS" ... you MUST select which account you want the email
to come "FROM". It takes awhile to get used to but works just fine.

Todd,

So in my scenario would I create separate user accounts in AD for each
Domain then add each account to their Outlook profile? I currently only
have a single account on my Outlook 2003 client and I do not see the
"Account" button. Where is that? Only available with multiple accounts
configured?

What Todd is referring to will not work with Exchange. Outlook supports only one Exchange account at a time. You can have multiple POP 3 accounts along with Exchange but I believe in your case all of your accounts are from Exchange.

(company A), providing material to ....us (company b), at a cheaper
price than we (company a), gave to the customer quoting the same job as
us(company b). You get where I am coming from....company a, b and c as
company d and e are not really affected.

Todd,

The easiest thing I can think of is to create another domain of a very
non-descript nature that your "stealth" accounting department should use
as their primary.

That would mask your companies overall relationships - but it would lead
to a little confusion on the senders part.
They would wonder why email sent to todd@... always comes back
as todd@....
On another note - what happens when these customers call ? Does your
phone system id the customers and inform the accounting people which
company they are supposed to front ? ( Many call centers do this )

And if someone just digs a little - using betterwhois.com to look at the
registration of the domains - they might be able to figure out how
everything is connected.

Also, if you "forge" the headers your mail might be flagged as spam.

I found this free add-in utility for Outlook 2003/xp - it might be able
to do what you want it to.

http://www.realpopup.it/realaccount/ no warranty - no guarantee - use
at
your own risk ! Not liable for anything !

Todd,
I don't use exchange, but...
I set up 3 accounts on my computer (internet mail style). They all collect
to my inbox, but...
when composing a new message, I have an arrow next to the send button
(outlook 2k). If I click that arrow, I can choose what account the mail is
sent out through, thereby giving the name and return address set up in the
account. On replies it selects it automatically to go back through the
account it was received through.
I hope this may point you in a direction.

Todd,

So in my scenario would I create separate user accounts in AD for each
Domain then add each account to their Outlook profile? I currently only
have a single account on my Outlook 2003 client and I do not see the
"Account" button. Where is that? Only available with multiple accounts
configured?

Todd,

Just went through this myself a few months back.

My Outlook client has 3 different email addresses associated with it.
One for SBC-Yahoo, one for my own domain name, and one for a hotmail
account.

When you want to send an email - on the button bar - there should be an
option for "ACCOUNTS" ... you MUST select which account you want the
email to come "FROM". It takes awhile to get used to but works just
fine.

I'm assuming in Outlook you have one profile with all three accounts.
Have you tried creating a different profile for each account and then
have Outlook prompt for the profile when it is launched?
