OT - Freeware

Thanks so much, I use DOS so seldom, didn't even think of that!

You folks are great!

Lydia

Could anyone recommend a piece of freeware that lists the contents of a folder into notepad or Word so that it can be printed?

I found something called FileMonkey, but can't get any reviews on it.

Thanks,
Lydia

As an old "DOS Head", try opening a "dos" window using cmd.exe from
Start > Run

Find your folder (cd\....)

dir *.* > c:\temp\filecontents.txt

Lydia,

You're working to hard ...

Start / run - "CMD" - command prompt

Change to the directory in question.

Type "DIR *.* >contents.txt

The ">" is an old unix redirector that sends the output of any DOS style
command to a file instead of the screen.

You can always use DIR in the command prompt mode or TREE.

see DIR /? or TREE /? for options.

DIR *.* /s > dirlist.txt (this will show all files in subdirectories)

or

TREE > treelist.txt (this will show the directory structure)

or

TREE /F > treelist.txt (this will show the files within the directory structure)

TREE c:\windows /F > treelist.txt (this will show the files and directory structure starting at the c:\windows path)

Then just open the file with the EDIT, NOTEPAD, or what you like.

I have an MS Access Database/Macro that recurses a folder's subfolders
and drops the file/path and the Last Modified Date into a table. A bit
of overkill for your needs, but you can run queries against the Datetime
stamps and verify alot of other things, at least that is what we use it
for.

Using DIR from a command prompt with a redirector is probably the
easiest way, but if you want to do it programmatically go to
www.sysinternals.com <http://www.sysinternals.com/> , they have lots of
free admin toys and utilities.

Lydia,
If you just want to print it then skip the redirect to folder idea
and just redirect to the printer. If you have a printer directly
connected to the PC then type in at the DOS prompt dir *.* > lpt1.
If you want to redirect to a shared printer and have permission to
print to it on your network then type dir *.* >
\\computername\printersharename.
BTW, if you use two redirection symbols (>>) then it will append to
the file instead of creating it new each time.
