[OT] Gateway BIOS setup & Win98 Network Neighborhoo d

I'd like to see the reasoning for that sequence explained in their manual!

Todd,

I have a gateway PIII-650 and had the same problem. The solution:

start up the computer, immediately begin alternating between the tab key and
f1 key, as fast as you can, without pressing both simultaneously. Setup
should appear.

Yes, I tried the <tab> but there were no further instructions in the POST
info. I am going to try F1 some more but try to be faster. The time frame
where it might be accepted may be very short. I think I have seen this on
another, non-gateway, PC. Thanks everyone for all the other suggestions,
which I will also try.

On the network neighborhood issue - I have already reinstalled Windows once
but not specifically checked the network settings, which I will now try.
Network access is OK and I can browse network locations via the "map network
drive" button activated on the Explorer screen, just no icon on the desktop.

Try the TAB key when booting....some of the newer
gateways have the "logo" splash screen, but return to
the traditional POST screen when pressing TAB.
Hopefully from here they list the key that needs to be
pressed.

I have also seen some BIOS's that need F2 pressed to
change settings.

Good luck

Todd,

The absence of the network neighborhood shortcut on your desktop relates to
your network card and more specifically, your drivers. Check in the control
panel/system and see if you have the card drivers and if they are working
properly. In the same control panel, click on network and check settings. If
everything is OK, you should have a short cut to network neighborhood on the
desktop the next time you reboot. Also, it will be a good opportunity to use
the pause/break button during rebooting on your keyboard to view any
messages on how to run bios set up.

A couple of questions I have struck out with, at Gateway and on MS
Knowledgebase, which the collected experience of this gorup may be able to
help with.

#1 - Over the long weekend one of our accounting people had their PC "used"
and someone deleted all of the Vantage files. I want to lock it down with a
bootup password but can not get into the BIOS setup. F1 and Del do not
work. It gives no option to go into setup as it starts up. This is a
Gateway Professional PIII-866. I have asked Gateway via email but have had
no response (surprise). Anyone know if there is a hardware jumper to
inhibit setup access or some other key for it?

#2 - The same user has lost the "Network Neighborhood" icon both on the
desktop and in Explorer. Anyone know how to get this back? Perhaps a
corrupted registry setting is to blame?

Thanks,

You could try uninstalling the netcard drivers, rebooting, then reinstall
the drivers (should automatically reinstall w/PNP).

If the network neighborhood icon still doesn't appear, then somethings up.
What does one do when something's up? Reformat C: , of course.

A reformat and restore of a gateway machine with windows 98, installing
office, and autocad, takes all of 1hr 11 minutes, probably significantly
less time than it takes to resolve most major file deletion problems.

Thanks Thad - I had him try your suggestion and he was finally able to get
into setup and set a password to prevent future intrusions.

We are going to try the network card re-install later today and see what
that does.

Network Neighborhood can be hidden from the desktop via a user profile
restriction as well. Make sure that is not the problem.

Good luck.

Thanks Thad - I had him try your suggestion and he was finally able to get
into setup and set a password to prevent future intrusions.

We are going to try the network card re-install later today and see what
that does.

Good luck

Yes, getting into the bios setup of a gateway is a pain.

However, I am happy with the fact that after using the computer for 6
months, installing a scsi card, 128 megs additional ram, reformatting the
hard drive with 98, NT, and recently NT server, I've never had to access
BIOS setup once, until Todd's issue came up.

My particular gateway is quite a stable machine (especially since I replaced
98 with NT)
As I mentioned before, out of the 40 or so gateways we have running now, the
only hardware related error we've had was a bad western digital hard drive,
which was replaced promptly. PC tech support hours have dropped to an
average of 1, 2 hours tops a week. Sometimes we have to reformat because
windows gets messed up, or a workstation changes hands, but that's not much
of a problem because these gateways pretty much install themselves. Plus,
after 2 years, we get new machines.

I don't have enough experience with all computer vendors to declare that
gateway's the best. All I know is since we've switched from compaq
workstations to gateway, cost per workstation and support hours have been
reduced significantly.

And you guys wonder why I don't like Gateways.
