ZoneAlarm 4 is solid but the free version doesn't allow you to specify IP
address ranges to exclude or include or other more advanced filtering
functions.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have Zonalarm and have been using it at home
for a long time... The things that are missing from the basic are things
like virus protection and reporting (I have Norton for virus, and don't have
the time to look over the reporting log anyway).
Also, I have stuck the free download on a CD with the CA version of the
removal of the SAN thing for my home users for this reason... My
understanding of the spread of this SAN thing is it looks for an open port
139 and slips in. Zone Alarm runs ports in full stealth mode so the
infecting machine will not even know you are there. If this is true, my
reasoning is to remove the virus, and then install ZoneAlarm all while
offline, and then connect to the internet once protected (yea, download the
update from MS when you can get it).
It worked for at least one of my users, but can anyone see a flaw?

Mitchell,

I second this. You open the ports YOU want to open. If something
"spy-ish" tries to establish an outgoing connection, ZoneAlarm can be set
to prompt you for permission.

With the recent news about the new virus attacks several of my users are
asking me about protecting their home computers. I encourage them to have
up to date virus protection. The subject of firewalls came up. Is this
really necessary for a casual user on a dial up connection? If so, how
about a recommendation of something that is free (or cheap) and/or easy to
use since I will be expected to also show them how to use it.

I am not up on software firewalls since we use a hardware solution for our
main and remote locations.

I have had zone labs zone alarm at home for a couple years. I believe
it's still free for home use and fairly easy to use.

From what I have personally seen over the last two days, being behind
a firewall is no guarantee (two WIN2K machines on our corp. network
behind a Sonicwall hardware firewall got hit, shame on me for not
having all the patches in place). Also had a home user on dial-up
that got hit as well as a home user on cable. Looks like anybody
running an unpatched NT based system is vulnerable.
This is a nasty bug, I can hardly wait to see what the next mutation
is going to be.

who and when, very interesting listing of addresses. Its free, its
updatable, its very very simple, very low resource usage. Black Ice is
a pay program, but does a very good job guarding the door. Add to that
list Spyware Blaster, Adaware 6.0 , The Cleaner, Spyware Search and

all running all the time. All of them have caught and kicked something.

I believe it is looking for port 135.

After reading about the virus on Trend Micro's site it looks easy to get rid
of.

I use Linux at home. No issues.
