OT - Hot swappable Disk

Rick,
Thank you for the valuable explanation. With this information, I'm planning to wait until the end of the day and that'll give it plenty of time to rebuild.
I appreciate your help and for sending that link!

Julie,
Jose is right, it is very safe to swap out Hot Swap hard drives in RAID. However, keep in mind what is going on:
-The drive failed and the RAID controller detected this by depreciating the disk from the RAID set and changing how data is written to the RAID Array. This happens when a disk either fails or is removed while still good.
-When the failed or missing drive is replaced the RAID array goes to work at rebuilding the array to cover all available disks. Until the array rebuild is complete the array is under heavier load, so the DB may not perform as fast as it does when operating normally. Also the array is not instantly back to normal when the disk is replaced, depending on the array configuration and size it can take several hours to restore to normal, during this time I would not remove any other disks as it will extend the time it takes to recover the array.
So while it IS safe for the hardware to remove hot-swap disks at will, it may not be safe for the data nor the performance of your system.
So if you replace a bad disk and then 5min later either another disk fails or is removed, the Array will again switch how data is stored and depending on the array data may or may not be lost. How many disk failures that can occur in an array are based on a normal, stable array, not one in transition.
Here is a good read for RAID 5, if you are using RAID 5, we are using RAID 50 some hybrid which can handle multiple disk failures at once without data loss:

Hi group,
I have a hard drive that failed on my server and I have a replacement for it. It's hot-swappable, but could someone tell me - is it really safe to just take the old one out and
put in the replacement without shutting it down? Should I at least stop the database? I'm nervous about having something go wrong, so any advise or assurance would
be appreciated!

Thanks,

We do it just for fun all the time, if you have RAID 10 and more than 3 or
4 disks it should be safe. Make a backup of your DB (external to this
server) and then do it

Thanks Jose,
That's what I needed to hear. :-)
(Maybe after being successful this first time - I'll try it just for fun
another time!)
