[OT] HP LaserJet Network Config

Many thanks to all who offered suggestions. I ended up setting up a 10 address DHCP scope. It took forever but the printer finally grabbed an address and I was able to web into it and set a static address. Now perhaps the driver software will install.

If you are having problems with DHCP or the printer's NIC, (assuming your printer has a working NIC) then you can use ARP to manually set a static IP address. You will need to know the MAC address of the printer's NIC and also a free IP on your subnet. Simply type "arp" in a MSDOS command prompt to get help on the topic and usage.

Kunal

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] HP LaserJet Network Config

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to setup a new HP LaserJet 2015n printer on our network. All the other network ready printers here have a LCD panel and menu structure for assigning an IP address. I am assuming there is an embedded web server for configuring the printer but I don't know the IP address for it. The HP web site help is not very helpful for finding a default address. When I print the configuration page it says the IP address is "Configuring" so apparently it does not have one set yet. Any hints how to get the IP address set?

Thanks,

Have you installed the printer software / drivers yet? If so the HP
ToolBoxFX should have been installed. You can open this by double
clicking the icon in the system tray. In the left panel click the
Network Settings folder, then click IP Configuration. There you can
specify the IP address

Not at the moment. That is a project in the works though. I am currently clearing users out of a block of 100 addresses to devote to DHCP and planned to turn that on on July 3rd (floating holiday day here). I can push that up if necessary and make a mini-block of 10 addresses if that would help. Makes sense that "configuring" may mean it is sitting there asking for an address.

Thanks. No I had not installed yet assuming the installation would ask for an IP address so I was trying to get that first to be ready. I'll install the software and see how that goes.

Enable DHCP on a server or router, restart the printer, print the
config, then connect to web setup using that IP. Set it for static
and assign the IP..

Sounds like it's trying to get a config via DHCP. Do you have DHCP on your lan? Even then, it could be hit or miss trying to figure out the temporary address they've been assigned.

There is the "HP Web Jetadmin" package you can download that might help. But it's HUGE and designed for large companies with dozens or hundreds of printers. But I think I can scan the network and find printers to be remotely managed.

Have a little home-grade internet router sitting around? You could plug a PC in temporarily and one printer at a time; let it DHCP an address long enough to get in and configure a permanent one.

Best long term is probably to setup DHCP with a static address reserved based on the printer's MAC address.
