OT-Inactive parts in jobs

Edward,

I am still on version 5.0 but I read in 5.2 you get a
warning when someone attempts to use an obsolete or replaced part. Also you
will be able to place a part on "run-out" status. For now my practice is to
put (obsolete or discontinued or do not use) in the description. Also I go
into the "where used" and make sure the part is not in any active revision.

We have a problem with our engineering crew pulling
inactive parts into jobs
via the get details function. We are on 5.0 and
wonder if Epicor has
created a warning for this when the "Get Details"
function is run in 5.1 or
5.2. I think this would be a valid modification
request if not. Does
anyone else have this problem?

Shirley,
That's pretty much what I was attempting to do
(and asked on the list)
earlier this week. What I came up with (as
suggested by Joanne Y.) involves
Access as well.

I link the Excel file in Access using "File / Get
External Data / Link
Tables".
Then I link using the same process (via ODBC) to the
Vantage Table I want.
Then I edit the relationships of the two tables by
linking PartNum in Excel
to PartNum in the Vantage Table.

Then I create a Query which has fields from both the
Excel table and the
Vantage Table.
The Query will have the correct data. If you save
this file, you can now
use the Query to report
in Crystal, or copy/paste the query back into Excel.
Using Crystal you
don't have to fiddle with Access everytime. For
one-time updates I just
cut/paste from Access.

There's probably a better way, but that's what I've
come up with.

Is there a way for an ODBC query to pull a value
from an Excel cell and
use
that value to search the data base.

What I'm trying to accomplish. Basic Non
Programing User enters a value
into
Excel cell, clicks a button on the Excel sheet,
data is pulled or
refreshed
based on the entered Value.

I can get the query to work by manually entering
the value when creating
the
query. But I'd like to build just one query to do
this rather than a
query
for each part.

For those of you who are running Win-2000 client PC's ...

How are you backing up those PC's? By backing up, I do not mean backing up
a few data directories. I'm talking about full image backups that can be
used to rebuild a PC after a hard drive crash or some other "Disaster".

I've been experimenting with the built in Win-2000 backup in disk to disk
mode over our net. The restore works 'Sort of' ... as in ... (a) load base
Win-2000 operating system on new drive (b) assign a IP address so the
machine is part of your network (c) run the restore option from the
operating system ... EXCEPT - device drivers such as video, nic, and sound
tend NOT to restore correctly. According to MS TechNet - this is by DESIGN
- gee, what idiot would design a restore function that won't / can't
re-install the base device drivers that make a PC work?

Also, just tried CA-Arcserv which we have used for several years
successfully on Win-98 machines only to have it fail big time. ( did not
restore ntoskrnl.exe cleanly so machine will not boot ) I'm told that you
have to run ArcServ SP3 on both client and servers to get a semi-clean
backup and restore. Even still, device drivers seem to be an issue.

Soooooo ... anyone out there in OZ know of a rock solid way to backup and
restore Win-2000 PC's ????????????????

Thanks !

We're on XP pro on all workstations. I've taken the philosophy of
expendable workstations. All user data goes to the server for back up.
Local data is held at the user's risk. All workstations have standard
software installs, Outlook *.pst files are stored and accessed from the
server. No user has a local profile on the workstation its all pulled from
the server. When a machine fails, a spare is slotted in, the user logs in
and away they go. The failed machine can be worked on without a user
looking worriedly over your shoulder asking is it done yet....... is it done
yet....... is it done yet...... whats that mean........ why did it do
that.... is it done yet.

Norton Ghost. Works great. Very Simple. All you need is a CD-ROM.
You create a boot floppy with Norton, reboot the PC, ghost the image to a CD
or Network drive and thats it.

When its time to restore, you either insert the CD and norton autoboots and
restores the drive or boot to the Norton floppy and restore from the
network.

If you mark a part inactive and it has a revision level, unapproved the
revision level to keep engineers from pulling it into jobs. If you don't use
revisions, change the part description to begin with "INACTIVE PART".
Hope this helps.

Shirley,
That's pretty much what I was attempting to do (and asked on the list)
earlier this week. What I came up with (as suggested by Joanne Y.) involves
Access as well.

I link the Excel file in Access using "File / Get External Data / Link
Tables".
Then I link using the same process (via ODBC) to the Vantage Table I want.
Then I edit the relationships of the two tables by linking PartNum in Excel
to PartNum in the Vantage Table.

Then I create a Query which has fields from both the Excel table and the
Vantage Table.
The Query will have the correct data. If you save this file, you can now
use the Query to report
in Crystal, or copy/paste the query back into Excel. Using Crystal you
don't have to fiddle with Access everytime. For one-time updates I just
cut/paste from Access.

There's probably a better way, but that's what I've come up with.

Is there a way for an ODBC query to pull a value from an Excel cell and
use
that value to search the data base.

What I'm trying to accomplish. Basic Non Programing User enters a value
into
Excel cell, clicks a button on the Excel sheet, data is pulled or
refreshed
based on the entered Value.

I can get the query to work by manually entering the value when creating
the
query. But I'd like to build just one query to do this rather than a
query
for each part.
Shirley
