[OT] Internet Explorer - Can't Select Text or Click in Form Fie

Followup to the odd issue with IE a week ago where I could not select text on a web site or click into form fields. Just incase someone else runs in to this.

I have a strong suspicion now that it is related somewhow to Adobe Acrobat Reader. Perhaps not as a cause but maybe something related to both it at IE. I have found that when browsing if, within the browser, I open any PDF file then when returning to a regular web page the text select and form entry both start working.

I am going to load a new version of Acrobat (both full version and reader) and see if the problem goes away. I am still using Acrobat 5.0 but plan to upgrade next week to the latest version. I'll pass along any results.

Sorry about such a strange OT but I have an odd issue with IE for a couple months now that is driving me nuts. Yes, there are alternatives to IE but for various reasons I need to stick with it. About 90% of the time when I open the browser I can not select text on the page or click into an entry field, such as on a form - like username / password fields. There is a workaround for entry fields by right clicking and "Select All" which will place the cursor therebut that is getting really tiresome. And not being able to select text and cut/paste it is a huge problem. Only workaround seems to be to select all and paste to Word then select text from there. The problems affect ONLY Internet Explorer. Once in a while I'll open it and it will work fine but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I tried upgrading to IE 6.1 but it did not help.

If anyone out there has experienced this or heard of a bug in IE (wouldn't be the first) or has a solution I would really appreciate any info you have. I would suspect registry damge from spyware (key logger maybe?) but have not had any on my PC and am protects half a dozen ways including CA eTrust PestPatrol. I have searched the web for clues but have come up empty.

Thanks,

All other programs work OK. Even forms in "preview" mode in Frontpage. Web site development for several sites is main reason I have to stick with IE. As long as it is the "gorilla in the room" I must accomodate it and make sure the sites work with it. Otherwise I'd be using Firefox routinely. My best guess is still a registry setting in some sort of policy related only to IE. I'll probably have to start searching around in the registry.

Todd:

below is what I found doing a search on 'cannot select text in IE' on
google.

Could this help in anyway? You mentioned web development, so I thought it
might help.

> Alternatively, put the browser into quirks mode by including the

>

Aside from the IE bug of not selecting text, the reason it "jumps around"
has to do with your source code. In your html, the right column comes first,
so if you are selecting text in the main content area and happen to end your
selection outside of the main content area (i.e. on or below the right
sidebar), it suddenly inverts your selection. But that's what it *should* do
due to the order of your source code. The typical behavior in every browser
that I'm aware of is this: text is selected/highlighted according to the
order it appears in the source, not the order it is positioned on the page.
So if you have positioned (fixed, absolute, even relative) elements on a
page, you might have unusual results when you highlight text.

I'm assuming you have all the updates for IE in place and have ran something
like Spybots or Adaware to check for spyware. Spybots will allow you to
immunize your IE, so it will not pick up spyware again. Is this happening on
just one computer or many?

I agree with Paul in that it sounds like spyware at work. In addition
to the tools he mentioned, Spy Sweeper is pretty good for cleaning up
the junk. I also use Microsoft's AntiSpyware tool (beta). The Advanced
Explorer tool is great for getting IE back to its orginal configuration.

Only happens on mine. I run Ad-Aware (purchased version), Spybot-SD and PestPatrol - all real-time protection plus daily scans. Then if needed Hijack-This and other debug tools. In addition my security settings in IE have always been (even prior to this) to prompt for scripts and active-x and I routinely select "no" unless I trust a site or am willing to say OK for the sake of getting something to run at all on a site. I don't think this issue is spyware related due to anything as recent as when this started happening. More likely some other program made some registry setting related to IE.
