Matt,
Thank you very much for that link. I printed copies for our exec mgmt to
help explain what is happening. Metal stamping must be different from
networking - we would be ecstatic if our customers were "only" 25 days late.
One point I have learned in this - we thought we had a T1 line and DSL was
not involved but I learned later it is T1 only to the CO and DSL from
there. Our new carrier is pure T1 all the way to their POP and backbone
network. As it happens they are also $40/month less than @Link was.
Another factor is that they don't co-locate any equipment in the ILEC CO's
so local exchanges (like Qwest for us) like them a lot better.
I think risk of more shakeouts in the DSL realm will be the price to be paid
for cheap lines in such a competitive field. The market will stabilize at
the number of vendors that can make enough money to stay in business even if
it means prices must rise to allow it. Adam Smith's "invisible hand of the
market" is alive and well even if new markets tend to be chaotic (and tough
on IT Managers!).
Good luck switching to a new ISP.

Glad to see we weren't the only ones out for 27 hours! (Only cause misery
loves company.) My understanding is that Norlight Telecommunications pulled
the plug on their DS-3's BEFORE @Link declared Chapter 11. Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel (
http://www.jsonline.com/bym/news/apr01/dsl27042601a.asp%c2%a0)
says that @Link was 25 days behind on payments and Norlight pulled the plug
without warning. This action forced @Link to declare for protection
purposes.
Â
Question is, how do we know WHICH of these providers is going down next? Are
we stuck with sticking with the Baby Bells for this service? They are not
too concerned with DSL rollouts because that steals from their leased-line
business. How will the competitors EVER make it, if people are gun-shy of
signing up with them for fear they won't be in business tomorrow? There is
safety in numbers, I guess, so go with the "big boys"?. It seems like this
whole Telecom Deregulation thing is turning into a huge MESS!

Thanks to all for the ISP suggestions. Unfortunately just when I sent the
request I discovered we were not able to receive any email. @Link's DNS
servers were on a DS-3 with another carrier who pulled the plug as soon as
they learned @Link was filing chapter 11. A court injunction now has this
restored but in the mean time we could not receive email. I made a very
fast decision to sign with Lighthouse Communications (based in Des Moines)
for either a new T1 or possible re-use the existing local loop that @Link
put in. They claim we will be up an running before 30 days when @Link cuts
us off.
InternetWeek's online newletter had a very timely article today about
carriers that go belly up. Here is a link:

and has given us at mot 30 days to find another ISP. They have laid off 90%
of their people including tech support so if there is a line problem it
could be effectively down a lot sooner. We have a T1 local loop in place

I am looking for suggestions from other people in the Minneapolis-St. Paul

todd, same thing happened to us here in denver at the first of the year- our
DSL provider JATO suddenly closed shop- we had about 3 weeks to cut over
before qwest got around to shutting the circuit down. looked at several
options, T1 thru AT&T, qwest, etc all around $800-1k per month, but we felt
these guys would probably be around awhile. however, someone turned me onto
Sprint Broadband Wireless- the salesguy got in to see me a day or two after
my initial call, we were installed and running w/i one week. in the denver
metro area, all you need is a line of sight shot to a nearby mountain, which
Sprint will come and verify before you sign up. Since Feburary, system has
been ultra reliable during all kinds of weather (at&t guys assured me a
couple of snowflakes would disrupt service). after the install, we tested
out at 250K, cost is $199 per month- about $500 to startup and install.
nice perk is employees can sign up as a business associate for $39/mo. $99
install. reliable and cheap are of my bosses favorite words...

It seems as though the ISP's going out of business is hitting everyone. In
Cleveland, we were one of the one's that were with a large provider (UUNET)
who used a local company who was a wholesaler to house the switching
equipment, etc. (Northpoint Communications). Well one day the DSL stopped
working because Northpoint closed under bankruptcy. We had no warnings.
There were about 100,000 companies and individuals affected by this. We made
the panic calls and we signed with ATT, after all it is usually their lines
at least in our area. We are still waiting for the final install - they
processed our order and guaranteed 30 days as opposed to the normal 90 days+
wait. Until it is installed we are operating on a 56 dial up instead of
760kb. Moral is spend a couple bucks more a month and go with a reliable
company that you think will be around a while.

From a Cost Vs Speed standpoint, Hugh's (Direc PC) is the the best for us.
We are in the country, no dsl or T1. The Satellite is 400kb down and will
be 128kb up. Unlimited access $49.95 a month. For more money you can

At the moment I use direcpc as my ISP thats part of the $49.00 package but
there are other ISP's that you can use (Earthnet is one). The hardware you
buy yourself is fairly easy to install. With the exception of mounting the
base, (our maintenance guys drilled the holes for me and ran cable) I
installed the entire package myself. The hardware costs about $100.00 to
$150.00 but you can find deals out there where the hardware is free. I've
done 40 megabyte downloads in 10 to 15 minutes. Right now we are still on
the hybrid system. Satellite down, land line out. Its just a question of
time before the two way sat is available in our area. We are pretty happy
with the results. Weather wise I had one issue where I had to clear snow
from the dish to get the signal back but that was a way heavy wet sticky
snow. The rest of the time its been VERY reliable.

Glad to see we weren't the only ones out for 27 hours! (Only cause misery loves company.) My understanding is that Norlight Telecommunications pulled the plug on their DS-3's BEFORE @Link declared Chapter 11. Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (
http://www.jsonline.com/bym/news/apr01/dsl27042601a.asp%ef%bf%bd)
says that @Link was 25 days behind on payments and Norlight pulled the plug without warning. This action forced @Link to declare for protection purposes.

Question is, how do we know WHICH of these providers is going down next? Are we stuck with sticking with the Baby Bells for this service? They are not too concerned with DSL rollouts because that steals from their leased-line business. How will the competitors EVER make it, if people are gun-shy of signing up with them for fear they won't be in business tomorrow? There is safety in numbers, I guess, so go with the "big boys"?.It seems like this whole Telecom Deregulation thing is turning into a huge MESS!

Our new Internet provider (@Link Networks) filed for bankruptcy yesterday
and has given us at mot 30 days to find another ISP. They have laid off 90%
of their people including tech support so if there is a line problem it
could be effectively down a lot sooner. We have a T1 local loop in place
and could be cut over to another carrier fairly quickly if we can find
someone more stable.
I am looking for suggestions from other people in the Minneapolis-St. Paul
area of Minnesota. Who are you using, are they responsive to your needs
and, if you don't mind, what do they charge for your bandwidth level? Given
the imminence of the cut-off and the typical time it takes to install I am
somewhat under the gun on this.
Thank you,
-Todd Caughey
