OT: Internet Radio

I ran into this same problem at my old company. First
thing, what are you running for a firewall, ISA
Server, PIX?

You can block streaming of audio from the firewall
portion like we did. My recommendation, block all
ports except the ones that you need like Port 80, 25,
100, 21.

Let me know and we can go from there.

Here's an even better solution but works as long as the machines are 2000
and XP machines that would need admin rights to install anything: delete
the drivers to the sound cards.

I have the same issue. It's similar to the FWD: Jokes that litter
everyone's Outlook and then it crashes and they wonder why. Depending on
your firewall you could block all the sites that people tend to go to. I
always had a handful of people that would find something else to listen to
so I went around and yanked out all the sound cards. Of course I caught
grief from some of the people but I asked "Well, what work do you do that
requires a sound card" I never got 1 legitimate answer except from the
General Manager and his response was "I am the General Manager, I want my
sounds card". Not much I can do with that so 1 guy out of 30ish has a sound
care and I don't have a huge issue.

Then disable the audio device in the BIOS (then password protect the BIOS so
users can't go back in and enable it).

You could also try implementing something like the iPrism appliance by St
Bernard Software, blocks and logs internet traffic. I set mine up to log by
client ip address. Forwarding reports on time spent on the internet also
sites visited to department managers has paid for the appliance many times
over by reducing internet abuse.

James,

One last suggestion. Go to the owners of the company and tell them that you
need to upgrade your internet connection to a larger pipe. Give them the
quoted cost of the pipe ( t-1 ) or whatever - per year.

When they choke and ask you why on God's green earth do you need a larger
pipe for so much money ... THEN tell them it's because you have a bunch of
users who insist on listening to Internet radio and that they are sucking
down all available bandwidth.

My guess is that the owners will quickly decide what the correct solution
is.

Good luck,

Todd Anderson

Greetings:

I would first check what ports the radio traffic is using - then shut them down at the firewall.

If your router/firewall has a monitoring or logging feature check there to determine what ports are being used by each workstation.
If that isn't possible - you could install zone alarm on your own system - then while using your own system to listen to internet radio broadcasts - zone alarm will tell what ports are being used.

I would agree with the others about restricting there user rights - but unfortunately there are programs out there that only work when users have administrator privledges. Off the top of my head, I think Voloview is one of them.

Another option is to delete the sound card's driver from the system. No driver - no noise. In fact, if you know what drivers are being used by your systems - you can delete them remotely using an administrative share.

If you're the sneaky vigilante type you could setup your router to intercept any port activity associated with Internet Radio or using your DNS set the IR URLs to redirect the users browser to your company's Internet Usage Page on your intranet. Oh the fun you could have......... ;-D

Okay group - We have not had a good off topic discussion today so how about
this?

I have several users that have brought in their own speakers and are now
running various apps to listen to internet radio which is sucking down
bandwidth like crazy
How can I stop this?

Forgot to mention that I have talked till I am blue in the face to get a
Internet usage policy in place and I have gotten no where.

Thanks

Start cutting off connections of the offenders. When they complain insist
that they must go to the General Manager to authorize reconnection. Give
them a note from you that he must sign. If they're going to act like greedy
children treat them like greedy children. Otherwise, you'll be blamed for
the poor performance. I did this with the owners son, never had a problem
since.

Then disable the audio device in the BIOS (then password protect the BIOS so
users can't go back in and enable it).

When a problem similar to this first came up I asked the users to only use
CD recorded music and use headphones. Worked out pretty good.
