Well, according to the most recent ComputerWorld IT Salary Survey (April 5, 2010 issue), a Help Desk/Tech Support specialist in the manufacturing industry averages around $48K.
In terms of your region (North Central), the average is around $45K for that same job category.
$40K would be a base starting number in my mind for budgeting purposes. The duties you list aren't insignificant in terms of knowledge and skill level. You get what you pay for.

Finally after 13 years there is serious talk here of creating a full-time IT Assistant position here. I've had half-time people for short periods from time to time...usually shared with another department like Purchasing or Engineering...but never someone dedicated to IT support.
The trouble with getting this done is that management either has no idea what to pay them or an unrealistically low target. Pretty much figuring I'll look for someone recently graduated from a vo-tech or Associate degree program and train them into the "real world". Location is St. Paul MN area. Preliminary duties list includes:
- Help desk and PC support (hardware, OS and malware cleaning)
- New PC configuration and software load
- Network setup of new user accounts
- Printer support - New installs, diagnose issues, help users use features
- Maintain IT hardware inventory in Maintenance Dept. PM system
- Assist users with Office software features (40 or so "knowledge worker" type users)
- Assist with Vantage (but not expecting to hire someone with this skill)
- Light report creation (Report Builder and Crystal)
- If possible experience or course work with SharePoint Services
In approximate terms (nearest $5K) what would a person capable doing these tasks need to be paid? Feel free to reply on-list or off-list if confidentiality is important. Rough geographic location will help I know there are a few small IT shops out there with an assistant so am hoping to get a sample of pay levels. I've already told management here to expect it would be around $30-35K but they seemed to be in "sticker shock." I'll be checking Monster.com and Craigslist too. Main concern with paying too little is all the time needed for training someone and then having them leave. Age old issue.
Thanks for any insights.

PS...if you know someone who would be interested in the above position and would qualify have them contact me via email and if/when the position is officially opened (target is June) I'll get back to them for a resume.
