OT: Medication Dispensing

My former employer took up this same issue. In the end it was decided
that we were not in the business of pharmaceutical supply distribution
and that the liability was not worth the risk. All over-the-counter
type medications were removed from the cabinets. I'm sure the
suppliers like stocking the cabinets with this stuff because as
someone else stated, the employees eat the stuff like candy. Or even
stuff it in their pockets and take it home for the family. The bottom
line was we did not want to be connected with supplying the
medications used to mask the symptoms of a larger medical problem to
develop down the road. What if that persistent headache turns out to
be a brain tumor? (insert your own Arnold Schwarzenneger accent) Or,
the antacids were covering up a stomach ulcer? Etc. Etc. Ask your
attorney or insurance agent what their opinion is.

We're having a discussion here as to whether we should include aspirin, tylenol,
ibuprofen, antihistamines and the like in our safety cabinet for employees.

How do you folks handle this stuff?
They provide their own?
Vending machine setup?
Free, no monitoring?

We provide that free of charge for our employees. We even provide cherry
flavored cough drops which they eat like candy.

We have a special vending machine for that stuff.
We have the basic pain relievers. Used to have antiacid and decongestant but no more. A medical supply outfit (Zee) keeps it all stocked. I have no idea what the cost of all this is and why the company feels it should pay for it. True if you can zap a headache you might be more productive. They have some stuff called 'PainAid" which is like souped up Excedrin that I do like a lot.

In the office it is take as you need it. I usually stock my desk with a hand full of various packets. In the shop only supervisors have access to the cabinets - mainly to make sure to see and record injuries if someone needs a bandage.

But come to think of it next time the boss is looking for cost cutting measures I think I'll ask why we have this. Not that I mind but....why?

-Todd C.
PS - At a former employer I kept a large bottle of Tylenol (which I bought) in our IT dept supplies cabinet and let my employees take what they needed. Until that is I got chewed out about liability issues for the company in providing "medicine".
