(OT) Network Attached Storage (NAS) Units

I have used a lot of different solutions to this problem. We have a
Maxattach, but I wouldn't store CAD files on it. At least not for 10
or more user. A NAS does not have the performace a server does. The
drives have slower data transfer rates and spindle speeds. You also
have to administer them seperatly. They will use Windows security,
but not all of them just insert themselves into your domain. I
purchased a new server after testing the performance with 3D drawings
on our NAS. The extra cost was worth it. You could consider
attaching a drive array to an exsisting server. Most have there own
controllers and memory so they don't add a lot of overhead to an
exsisting server.

I use a Powervault 715N from Dell. It is great, simple and we store all our
CAD on it as well.

Were looking at the same thing. I'd look at the server you plan on attaching it to. Can it handle the additional work and keep up with it's normal requirements? I'm finding I can buy another server with enough drive space for about the same amount of money. This way I'm not taxing one of my current servers.

Although I would like a more formal NAS solution (looking at Iomega) I have
setup a refurbed desktop PC (Celeron 800Mhz) with a 100GB second disk
running Win-98se and it is working fine as an archival storage solution.
I'm in the process of moving everyone's Outlook Archuive .pst files to it so
they get backed up every night as well as automating desktop backups to
store the .qic files there (and get taped at night). For $800 or so it is
working fine and has relieved space issues on the mainline servers. If I
need more capacity I could easily add another 100GB+ drive.

We used one for a while for our CAD files. As long as they pull the files
to their local drive to work on them it seems fine, but as soon as someone
tries to make changes to a file on the Snap Server you see real performance
problems. Especially with Pro/E files.

FYI, I've purchased the Quantum Snap Servers (160GB to 960GB) as an
inexpensive NAS solution... GREAT devices up-and-running with security in
under 10minutes! the most time consuming part being unpacking ;^)
However, rumor has it their selling off that business unit and or going out
of business :(
I'm looking for confirmation on that rumor...

Marty,

We recently purchased the Maxtor Maxattach NAS 4300. We use it for all
our working files. So far we have not seen any performance problems, or
for that matter any problems at all.

We have been looking for a NAS solution as well. I would have preferred the
Dell 715N, but they are in the range of $1000 more than anything else. Does
anyone who has a Dell have any pointers as to why is would be so much more?

Brian
We have been using the external Maxtor firewire 160gb drives for about 6
months now and have had no problems with them at all. I was looking for a
low cost storage solution for sharable directories, intermediary backup
devices and temp storage space. We now have 2 of these drives and use them
to back our servers and pc's up to before going to tape. We also use them
for drawing files and sharable user directories. We reformatted them with
NTFS and can now use AD for security. We use Ultrabac and Diskeeper with
these drives and they have been ultra reliable. Another feature we liked
was the ability to chain multiple drives together. The technology has
improved and the speed has gotten better so for the cost I don't think you
can go wrong. And, it can be ported to any machine. We also had to buy a
card to connect these drives, but it's a standard PCI board.

Thanks,
Mark S. LaRosa

We have a 705N and have had to replace 2 HD's in it in a year and a half.
Other than that it works great! Dell replaced the entire unit the first
time.
The 705N uses a Linux based OS where the 715N as I understand it uses a
scaled down version of Windows 2000 server. The security should be easier to
setup on the 715N because of that.
We use Backup Exec 8.6 to backup files on our 705N but it is slow because
you cannot install an agent accelerator.

715n is the W2k kernel... I have had no issues at all with that. I backup
my files using Arcserve 2000 every night. I have no speed issues at all
either for backup, restore or just working on the files on the NAS. My
engineers use primarily Solidworks and UG but don't need to copy the files
to local drives to work. They work right off the NAS.
