OT: Network Attached Storage

Does anybody know of a good IDE Raid controller that can do Raid 0,1 and 5?

I setup a Pentium 200 with two 250 GB IDE drives and an Adaptec 1200 Raid 1
controller for about $700. I moved all of my CAD files from previous years
(165 GB) to it and made them Read-Only. My attitude is if you want to work
on a drawing from 2002 copy it to the CAD04 folder and work away.

Anyone using NAS servers for file storage? Our general file server is
running out of space and I'm looking at a Snap or Iomega unit that'll
run RAID 1. Any other unit I should check out, things to watch out
for? TIA!

I've been using a plain old PC running Windows-98 with a 100GB disk as a dirt cheap NAS respository for seldom used files. Mostly to prove the concept so I can buy something more durable.

I'm currently debating the Iomega 400m unit with 640GB which offers RAID 1 and 4 X 160GB hot swap drives. Also 2.6Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM and Dual 10/100/1000 NICs. For my uses I will probably JBOD it rather than RAID. It runs about $3,700.

The alternative seems to be to build a server and load it with some large SATA disks (as opposed to more expensive SCSI) and see what I can do to beat that price point. Mostly what I want it for is storing user desktop backups, user Outlook PSTs and documents used by Vantage document management (QA photos, CAD drawings, part work notes, etc...). Maybe even intra-day Vantage backups and near-line backup at night of the other servers before going to tape. So performance is not a huge issue. Seperate server would also allow adding a new tape drive for backups - I don't think the Iomega box has a tape option.

Since I am not going to RAID my main concern is "bang for the buck" and future expandability hence looking at a seperate server - but the Iomega box sure looks easier to set up.

I too would welcome other opinions.

I recently purchased a NAS unit from Dell for $2200. 100GB of RAID
storage, Dual 1000MB NICS, 2U Rack Mount. Set-up took like five minutes
and I have all but forgotten that it exists. It serves as a file
repository for my engineering department where performance is an issue.
Users are very happy with it. I use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection
(new version of Terminal Services Client) to connect to it if
necessary(it is in California I am in Michigan.) Couldn't be happier
with it. Don't know that I will ever buy another "file" server.

Check them out before you buy.

Along the same lines ... does anyone have any good ideas for a stand alone
tape backup device ?

aka an embedded operating system ( linux? ) with a tape drive that can be
programmed to access MS servers...

How about FreeBSD unix www.freebsd.org with Samba www.samba.org ? That'll
get any old [or new] PC emulating a windoze file server in short time for
zero software cost. With a little more effort, it can authenticate users
from an NT PDC or act as your PDC.

I just ran across this article about "Bacula" that sounds very
promising [I've not used it myself, nor read the whole thing yet]:

I setup a Pentium 200 with two 250 GB IDE drives and an Adaptec 1200 Raid 1
controller for about $700. I moved all of my CAD files from previous years
(165 GB) to it and made them Read-Only. My attitude is if you want to work
on a drawing from 2002 copy it to the CAD04 folder and work away.

Anyone using NAS servers for file storage? Our general file server is
running out of space and I'm looking at a Snap or Iomega unit that'll
run RAID 1. Any other unit I should check out, things to watch out
for? TIA!

Erik
