I need to get a serious network scanning software (not those free ones
that do not give me much info), and I wonder what the group uses. Maybe
some extra tools, etc.

Thank you.

nmap is arguably all you need http://insecure.org/ to determine what's
plugged in (or otherwise accessible) and optionally, what services are
available on it.

I experimented with "The Dude" http://www.mikrotik.com/thedude.php a few
weeks ago; it's sort of a graphical version of nmap. It determines
what machines are on your network, displays a graphic map, then gives
point & click convenience to drill down to management and informational
functions.

Nessus http://www.nessus.org/ scans for specific, known vulnerabilities
and reports them.

Thank you, Wayne. The dude looks good. I will install the new beta and
see.

Mario:

I know you said "not those free ones", but try Look@Lan -- it's free, but seems to be useful to me. Shows all the nodes, active, not active, OS, so on. I honestly thought we'd paid for it, but when I just double-checked, it is free ware. Highly rated. But I don't have a complex network--just a few servers, 50 workstations, 6 switches, no Citrix or anything like that. Not running terminal services, no wi-fi, just simple stuff.
