OT: Network Storage Devices

Jasper,

We are currently using a Maxtor 4300. I would NOT recommend this model.
We love the idea but we have had problems with this unit since we
purchased it. We have hard drives die on us, we have had a power supply
go bad on us. The processor and fan both have died on us. When we
called to have the processor and fan replaced since it was/is under
warranty - they did not have any in stock and wanted us to wait. To
this day I still have not received my replacement (4 weeks)! We
purchased one ourselves. The maxtor tech support stinks!

Best Regards,

Does anybody use any Network Storage devices on their network? How is
the technology, is it up to par with your traditional File Server or is
that still the best route to take. Any suggestions on brands I could
look into. We want one that supports RAID 5.

Any suggestions

Jasper

I would suggest you get a NAS with Windows Server as the OS, the older one
we have uses something else, form of Linux I think, and the web based
security is not easy to setup.

We have a Dell NAS appliance based on Windows 2000 which integrates
seamlessly into our Windows 2000/2003 active directory domain.

The model we have has 4x 80Gb drives in a RAID 5 configuration with dual
gigabit network ports and as usual with Dell kit we've not had any problems
with it at all.

Paul.
