Hi all,

We "lost" one of our 3Com SuperStack 24port switches over the
weekend. It was a managable switch with a fiber module added to run
a timeclock in our warehouse. Instead of doing a straight
replacement we're thinking about upgrading the switch and replacing
the fiber with wireless.

We could purchase an unmanaged switch and wireless router/access
point for less. We would be upgrading to a gigabit switch and have
further expansion capabilities to the shop.

The big questions is, what is the big advantage of a managable
switch over an unmanagable? When we purchaced the 3300 we needed it
to have the fiber module expandability which only came with a
managable switch at the time.

Thanks!

- Erik
I think the best deal is on Ebay for an HP Procurve 4000. Awsome managed switch, very inexpensive and totaly configurable to just about any module you need.

I have purchased around 20 of these units on ebay without a problem.

We are sort of going the opposite direction...migrating gradually to all managable. At the strong urging of our network consultants too. We are all 3Com SuperStacks (either straight gigabit or at the least with two gigabit up/down links) and now buying only manageable switches. After I saw some of the reporting and "discovery" tricks identifying problem links and PCs is much easier. I can configure individual ports via web interface from my desk or any PC with a browser. Had a problem last Friday with a gigabit link to our new email server and was able to "see" info info to determine it was a cabling issue that was throttling it to 100Mbps.

So for now at least our gagabit server/switch backbone switch now connects only to managed switches. I still have a few Tier III switches in remote parts of the plant that may or may not get upgraded as they are replaced. Only hesitation there is expense versus dirty environment so where possible I put the managed units inside offices. I think, too, if you ever adopt VOIP you might need managed units anyway.

Replacing Fiber with Wireless????
What is the benefit?
Wouldn't you be giving up great stability and speed for flaky and slow
wireless?
I just want to make sure I am not missing something here...

We started running a timeclock on wireless and it's been working
quite well. The benefit will be the ability to use wireless devices
in the shop should we ever have the need. Also, if we would like to
add a workstation or timeclock we won't need a new cable run.

The other option is keeping the existing fiber and getting a $150
converter box to connect instead of $400 fiber modules for switches
that cost twice as much.

Erik,

How were you testing ?

First - wireless is half-duplex - trans then receive - not both at the same
time.
Second - available bandwidth will decrease drastically with additional
workstations
i.e. 54mbs / 20 workstations = 2.7 mbs
As you add more wireless workstations they compete for AP time futher
degrading performance.

Unless all your wireless workstations are running Citrix - I would still go
with fiber for the bulk of your network (at least from wiring closet to
closet), gigibit copper to the workstations, and wireless where you really
need it.

Have you benchmarked your fiber ? If it running slower then you think it
should, bring in a network wiring contractor to verify the fiber - too much
attenuation and your errors go up and speed goes down.

Also, what speed was your original fiber module ? I had some hp procurve
hubs with fiber modules that I had inherited when I took a job - the fiber
was only running at 10mbs - half duplex because of the modules. Needless to
say - that got replaced with gigabit switches and fiber modules. 10 gig is
out for the real speed freaks.

Good luck,

Charles

Well my $.02 is this. Get a switch, if you don't see the difference
between managed and unmanaged get the cheaper one, and attach an AP to
that. But use Wireless only for "complicated" situations. Run wire where
you can. Why? Well:

1. stability - wireless is very, lets say, "jumpy" - it's like a woman,
you love her 29 days of the month, but come that one day in a woman's
life and you want to jump off a cliff. (I mean absolutely no offence to
women, but ladies, be realistic, you know what I'm talking about)

2. backbone connectivity - fiber between switches, means almost 0
latency, communication between you servers and the last hop before the
WS is crucial.

3. the future of your phone system - there will come a day, where VIOP
will become a subject in your company, and wireless, even G, is not an
answer. Maybe wi-max, but that has to get cheaper.

4. Vantage hates slow and unstable connections, I have wireless all over
the company, but my laptop users look for cables when they need to use
Vantage. If the can't find one, they'll use citrix.

We used to have all managed switches and now they are unmanaged. The
only thing we might have lost is troubleshooting capabilities but
after three years of using the unmanaged switches we haven't had a
problem. The other thing you lose is port replication, as in, if you
wanted to filter/monitor network traffic across a switch, in a managed
switch you could mirror all ports across a single port but with an
unmanaged switch you cannot do this.

Wireless nowadays is probably very stable, especially in a shop area
but the tradeoff is convenience vs. security. If you run wireless,
make sure you enable the best security features the device can handle.
I'm not a security guru so you'll have to study the manual.

When we went from ethernet hubs to fast-ethernet switches, we also had
to swap out all of our fiber adapters and the fiber concentrator
(fiber hub if you will). At each switch we used a converter that
plugged into the switch, as an add-in module. We replaced the
original fiber concentrator with a block of fiber-to-ethernet
adapters. The concentrator originally cost about $30K but the new
block of adapters was only about $2,500 if I remember right. I think
the brand was Allied Telnesen or something like that.

Hope this helps,

Well my $.02 is this. Get a switch, if you don't see the
difference
between managed and unmanaged get the cheaper one, and
attach an AP to
that. But use Wireless only for "complicated" situations.
Run wire where
you can. Why? Well:

1. stability - wireless is very, lets say, "jumpy" - it's
like a woman,
you love her 29 days of the month, but come that one day
in a woman's
life and you want to jump off a cliff. (I mean absolutely

2. backbone connectivity - fiber between switches, means
almost 0
latency, communication between you servers and the last
hop before the
WS is crucial.

3. the future of your phone system - there will come a
day, where VIOP
will become a subject in your company, and wireless, even
G, is not an
answer. Maybe wi-max, but that has to get cheaper.

4. Vantage hates slow and unstable connections, I have

Switches have 100M of bandwidth to each port. Wireless is sharing 54M
minus the overhead for WEP with all the devices connected to each AP.
In my opinion wireless works well for Data Collection clients because it
uses very little bandwidth and allows you flexibility to move you
clients in your warehouse or shop. You can also get wireless
printservers so you can print Job Travelers, Pick Lists and Packing
Slips to the warehouse and shop.

But when it comes to Servers, Power Users, and Uplinks or Backbones
wireless should never be an option. Bottom line is both have a place in
your network but make sure you pick the right one for your application.

Just me 2 cents,

Rich

Subject: [Vantage] Re: OT / Network Switches

Bruce Brannan

The unmanaged gigabit switches just arrived, just have to decide on
the fiber. If we go wireless maybe we'll stick to 1 timeclock per
access point. We may just keep the fiber up with a 10mbs converter
box since that's the speed it's been running since it was installed.

Thanks for all the info!

Thanks, right now I'm very close to going there and using it.

I'm going to look for that cliff now. Too bad we're in IL,
it'll be a
long walk.

(I mean absolutely
no offence to
women, but ladies, be realistic, you know what I'm talking
about)

2. backbone connectivity - fiber between switches, means
almost 0
latency, communication between you servers and the last
hop before the
WS is crucial.

3. the future of your phone system - there will come a
day, where VIOP
will become a subject in your company, and wireless, even
G, is not an
answer. Maybe wi-max, but that has to get cheaper.

4. Vantage hates slow and unstable connections, I have
wireless all over
the company, but my laptop users look for cables when they
need to use
Vantage. If the can't find one, they'll use citrix.
