[OT] NT 4.0 to 2003 migration

That's hard to qualify. I've seen Raid 5's that seem to run beautifully during normal day to day operations. The abuse the db received wasn't that great - however, during an upgrade during the schema change it became the electronic equivalent of a slug.

So it really depends on the volume of transactions and the size of the database and don't forget the horsepower in the server.

The simplest thing to do would be to make the Raid 5 into a Raid 10, by adding one more drive. Then you would have a mirrored stripe set. Which is the fastest & safest Raid configuration. I would also add an additional drive to be a hot spare - but that's me. You're cost per byte would be higher, but drives are cheap (compared with day's gone by). Raid 5's lose their performance due to the math required to calculate and writing the ECC information.
A mirror just duplicates the data. The stripe set is like doubling the bus width. For each clock cycle you push or pull twice as much information.

Yes the RAID 5 will be on the same server. I guess I never thought to ask
or explore the possibility that it would slow down Vantage. How slow are we
talking and is there any way of getting around it?

Will the RAID 5 be on the Vantage server or just a plain old file & print
server ?

Raid 5 works very fast for reading data out of a database, but is very slow
(and not recommended by Vantage and others for db apps) when writing to the
database. It will work, but it's not speediest.

I am upgrading my Dell Server tomorrow from NT to Windows 2003 Server. I
have a consultant coming in at $75 an hour. We are going to be installing
3
new hard drives and using RAID 5. The consultant estimated 20 hours for
the
project but he said to go high rather than low to give us cushion for the
price. We have 35 users and going to be building it from scratch with the
exception of Vantage. I will let you know after this weekend on how long
the project does take and what we run into.

Ok all you IT gurus. We need an estimate for how long it will take to do
a
migration from NT to 2003 server. I imagine this information would be
beneficial to anyone planning a migration. We're having our IT support
contractor quote on the migration and we want to have an idea of how
long/how much this will take (so we don't get ripped! Not that we would,
we
like our IT guys).

Here's what we have:

PDC - also print server and handles miscellaneous data folders
BDC - also handles all the engineering files, drawings, etc.
MRP - Vantage 6.0 with VBI 6.0 and CorVu
FACTS server (not used anymore - old MRP; if that's what you want to call
it!)
Linux Internet Server
Exchange server (not used anymore - we are getting our email from our
parent
company, but we may be setting up our own exchange server to keep the
bandwidth down)
Windows XP terminal service used for remote desktop connection to run
Vantage
Data Collection - 3 computers
Approximately 40 users for the network, all with windows XP pro or W2K
Approximately 120GB worth of data

We will be getting a Dell 2600 with multiple hard drives, power supplies,
boo-koo ram etc. to handle most of the functions. We have this quote
already. We will also have a separate print server to handle all those
functions.

Please let me know if any of you have any do's and do not's for this
project. They can be either mission critical items or simple things to
keep
it from getting complicated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You should use Raid 10, not 5, on database applications.
