I've been having the same issue here, since going to 5.1. It was happening
to our Accountant (Excel), ususally by mid day. I increased her RAM to 384
MBs, and now it doesn't happen until late afternoon. Each time I have her
reboot, things go back to normal for a while. Unfortunately, she doesn't do
this until she turns green and makes her head spin around in circles. LOL. I
just love those Bean Counters. : ) From our end, at least, it appears that
resources are not being freed up properly. Hopefully somebody else will have
a better explaination, and solution, to this situation.

Possible point of examination. If you are running OFFICE XP (maybe Office
2000) (I think) there is a tendency for these products to check the
SCHEDULER file on the remote machine when pulling documents across a network
this causes a slow response. I would suggest that you go into services and
set the SCHEDULER to manual or disable and see if your responses dont
improve.

Check in the control panel to see if "Find Fast" somehow got turned on for

This problem will occur if this user has any shares to servers that don't
exist anymore. See if there are any red Xs in my computer.

Here is one that has me stumped.

I have one user who is running Windows NT 4 WS with 256 Ram, 10/100 (either
speed) connections, and Office 97.

His network speed is great. His Vantage is fast and he can pull large files
over the LAN quickly. Word and Excel work fast locally. However when he
opens or save an Office document on any network drive (server unspecific) it
literally takes 30-45 seconds to open or save. Any other docs (pdf, dwg,
etc) are fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office in vain. Any
ideas would be a great help.

Thanks

Right, you are, Greg. Office 97 as well as Office 2000 have this same problem.

That's what I've been hinting at, but was expecting support to disagree.
Seems like too much of a coincidence that reboots, and RAM upgrades, resolve
the problem (temporarily). We had a similar problem with our previous ERP
package, that ran on Oracle. In that case, memory leak was identified as the
culprit... Les

People have been complaining about this that rarely even use Office products
(Word, if at all). They keep blaming Norton AntiVirus. I have had my
doubts about NAV, but never thought that I should be looking at Vantage. My
own machine slows way the heck down - I was thinking of ways to try to
finagle a nice new Pentium 4...

I initially questioned NAV myself, but disabled it on our Accountant's
machine long enough to find out that it was not the problem. I still suspect
some kind of issue with 5.1, and not releasing RAM properly. We jumped from
3.0 to 5.1, so I can't say for certain that the problem started with 5.1. We
didn't have this issue with 3.0. In fact, we had no issues with 3.0. So much
for progress. No pun intended. I second the P4. I just bought two for a
couple of our users, and time to Vantage Logon screen is just under 5
seconds.

Thanks Troy. That's one more thing to rule out, and it still seems to be
pointing in the direction of RAM... Les
