And since this is an ERP newsgroup, there are some open source ERP
systems,
like:

http://www.sequoiaerp.org/

which is built on:

http://www.ofbiz.org/

There was an article awhile ago that talked about open source ERP:

The Case for Open-Source ERP
http://www.thechannelinsider.com/article2/0,1895,1888928,00.asp

But I don't know how many companies have the programming resources to
pull
this off.

I just wanted to let everyone know of a new Customer Relationship
Management software package we just implemented called vTiger
(www.vtiger.com); it's a PHP / MySQL solution. We needed a CRM to
replace our legacy ACT! Database and after looking at the CRM module in
Vantage I came to the conclusion it was not going to meet our needs
especially after the fact we would have to add a bunch of licenses as
well as implement the mobility package for our field users. The best
part of this package is its cost..$0. The company makes it's money on
support contracts and customizations. The open source community is
tight on this project as there are many dedicated users so bugs and
fixes are quick. The company has a demo database for perusal that can
be accessed from the website. I highly recommend this package!

The system is now online and working well so I thought I would pass on
our success story. Let me know if anyone has any questions on the
product.

Dan
Thanks for the info Dan.

Do you plan on integrating vTiger with Vantage?

Cool! Thanks for the heads-up on that one.

I'm a big fan of open source stuff myself, and would like to kick in
a few other recommendations:

OpenOffice.org - now in v2.0, it's so good you can pretty much toss
MS Office out the door, along with its extravagant price. As you may
have read, the State Government in Massachusetts recently decided to
ditch MSO and go with OOo starting in 2007. It was actually enough
to provoke MS to attempt their own open standard, but Too Little, Too
Late. Only downsides I've run into: macro language not compatible
with MSO, database package (new in 2.0) nowhere near as mature as
Access. For 95% of the PC users in your org', it will do just
fine. I've been using it exclusively for 2 years
now ;) www.OpenOffice.org Oh yeah... if you just want to test
it, it's VERY non-invasive, compared to most windoze programs
(probably because it runs on several OSes.) You can load it in 2
minutes, along side MSO, and later delete it with practically no
residual disk or registry junk.

IP-Cop - open source Linux based firewall. Slap up to four NICs (or
a multi-port) in a PC, and configure it via a slick web
interface. In addition to the internal and external interfaces, has
two available as a DMZ for externally accessible servers, and another
for wireless. As close to "turn key" as you can get. I bought an
old rack-mount HP NetServer ($46) and an Adaptec 4-port NIC ($11) on
Ebay, and am migrating our appliance-style firewall to it. www.ipcop.org

Samba - emulates most stuff a Windoze server does, for free, and
higher performance. We're just a five person office, but a P3-600
box with some SATA disks handles all our file & print serving, and
looks just like a PDC to the desktop boxes. www.Samba.org
