(OT) Opening Previous Version of MS Works file

Wendy,
Have you tried the file "ConvPack.exe" from Microsoft. If you can't find
it, I can send a copy. The problem you are having is very similar to one
that someone here was having with a home system. I gave them this patch and
they never got back to me (usually a good sign).
If you would like me to send a copy, just let me know. If you have already
tried that route, I am out of my league, because I have always avoided Works
like it was the plague. I was finally happy when Microsoft included Word as
the word processor so that there was at least a part of the suite that
talked with the rest of the world.
Anyway, hope I can be of assistance. If not, good luck to your cause
anyway.

:)

Jeremy,

Yeah, I wish it wasn't that way I could use your idea. They are all .wps
file extensions.

Are you SURE its a Works file. The old Lotus 123 also had a document
extention of wks. If thats the case, the only way I could extract the
data
was to install Lotus 123 and then export it to excel from Lotus. We had
several hundred files like this.

Wayne, Jeremy,

Unfortunately I tried both of your suggestions to no avail. The funny
thing
is it's not all of the old version that we have problems opening. Some of
the older files open up just fine. Hmmmm........

There is also an add-on program that's available free for download at
www.microsoft.com that installs all available conversion programs. We
had
something similar with Works and Lotus files. This will also install
all
international converter programs.

Ran into something similar with Office 97. It had separate converters
for

Works 3 & 4. The default setup was to only install the 4.0
converter. Even if you installed both, the files still had the
identical
extensions. So you had to correctly (or by trial & error) select the
version in the "File type" box.

HTH, check the setup to see if the converter is there, then try
explicitly
selecting the version.

Hi everyone!

Does anyone have a problem opening earlier versions (earlier than 6.0) of MS Works files? We are having a problem opening up just about any size Works Processor software files that were created in a different version. I went to MS Knowledgebase to search, but haven't found anything similar to the problem we are experiencing. The funny thing is when we try to open the files we don't get an error. It just "hangs" in the not responding state without giving us an error.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!
