[OT] Outlook2000 Archive 2GB Size Limit?

We are using Outlook 2003 and I ran into a similar problem several
months ago. I believe there is a switch in the user settings that
allow for large file sizes, which appearantly is anything larger
than 2GB. Why this is not a default setting, I'm not sure. Have
your IS folks do a quick web search on this to see if this is the
same for 2000.

Can anyone confirm that there is a 2GB file size limit on PST (archive) files in Outlook2000? I have a user having difficulty and coincidentally it is right at 2GB. I thought I saw this somewhere. I think I might need to create for him a new archive.

Oh yes there is! We have had that problem and sometimes when you reach that
limit it will randomly delete messages.

We do not have Exchange here so I am not sure. All I know is that if you
are
downloading into a pst file you will have this issue.

Followup to my own question:
1. Yes, 2GB is the limit for .PST and .OST files.
2. Once hit this really screws up the .PST file
3. There is an 'Inbox Repair Tool' that can help fix corruption in the .PST but it might not work if the .PST file is at the limit, it will abort with a fatal error. The tool is in C:\program files\common files\system\mapi\1033\nt .
4. Microsoft has a PST Crop Tool that can trim data (in 25MB chunks by default) from the oversized .PST file. You run this, make a new .PST file and then re-run the Inbox Repair Tool and see if it now works. If not, delete the trimmed files, trim more and try again. If so you have the choice to delete and trim less and try again. Over and over depending on tollerance for data loss.

Also, I hear there is a utility that gets installed in a Office service pack that watches for .PST files that are going to hit 2GB and issues a warning before it gets corrupted.

Just in case someone has this issue and searches the archive someday.

Thanks,
-Todd C.
