[OT] Password Protecting Excel Workbook

> Is there a way to set a workbook to require a
> password to open it at all?

I see that the question has been answered, but let me also say that if you
want it really secure its safer to put the file on the network and restrict
the access to only that particular user.
I know you can hide a worksheet and protect a workbook to keep an Excel sheet unviewable without entering a password...but is there a way (without added software) to set a workbook to require a password to open it at all?

Thanks,

Open your excel sheet goto tools options and security. There you will
get fields for "OPEN" passwords. For what its worth, after some
shenanigans by a former financial employee putting an open only password
will get you fired here. I won't let users put passwords on excel
sheets. If I want to conceal something I change the text to white then
hide the sheet. But no passwords.

Todd,
After the excel workbook has been created - this is the way that I have
password protected it in the past.
Go under file, save as, and options. Under the options, you can set up a
password just to open the workbook, and a password to be able to modify it.

Thanks. This is President/Owner of company needing it. I think he is working on salaries and cost of living adjustments and Really wants it to be secure. I'll bet he hides and pass protects the workbook plus sets an open password.

If it really needs to be secure you may want to consider not placing it on the network. Password crackers are readily available on the internet that will crack Excel password protection (unless the user has put some effort into creating a 'hard-to-crack' password)

I purchased a product called Passware that will unlock almost any password
for any product. Works really well. Tries the most common sequences then
tries every possible combination. The longest it took to crack one was 2
days on an excel spread sheet but it finally did it. With Adobe, MS Access
and Word its always been instant.
