[OT] PC Memory Question

We use SolidWorks and have found the same to be true. Even if the
GeForce cards are approved, they are optimized for DirectX apps
(Games), and the Quadro cards are optimized for OpenGL CAD apps. If
you are looking for performance instead of just functionality these
cards are the way to go.

the ATI FireGL series for CAD. The GeForce and Radeon cards still
work, but we have noticed occasional performance issues and glitches
when using them. Also, I've found that anything over 512 MB of
system memory doesn't make that much difference unless you're working
on a huge CAD drawing / model.

We have a CAD package that is really slow on a 2.4Ghz PC with 512MB RAM. Engineers want to see if adding memory will help. System has DDR 226 memory in it now. I have another temporarily unused PC with DDR 266 in it. Can I use this in the 226 machine or is the speed/frequency critical to be exactly the same? All we need to do is see if buying more memory will speed the software up a bit (currently at vendor recommended level but my rule of thumb is always use double recommended). But I am not real clear on mix/matching DDR RAM and if "faster" can be used in slower machine (or is it the other way around?).

Generally speaking. If the two modules are incompatable the system wont
boot. It shouldn’t injure your system to try. Second, Memory will
generally run at what ever is the slowest chip. Third, make sure your
settings on your motherboard are set correctly. For example, Gigabyte
uses a DIP switch to set clock rates, other systems do that in the bios.
Go through all the bios settings and make sure that they are set to
optimum. Also, make sure there isn’t something running in the
background that is sucking processor power. Turn off every “service”
you can. Microsoft seems to default every ON I have marked increases in
performance by just turning of some things.

What kind of system is it? If it's not a custom built PC then you can look online and find the memory specs for the particular PC. You need to make sure the motherboard can handle the DDR 266.

Also,

Look at your performance monitor, it should give you an idea of where the bottleneck is.
I'm not sure but CAD software is usually processor intensive because of all the calculations. A 2.4 GHz is probable more than plenty but you could have other threads running that is slowing the system down.

Thanks - CPU was my first thought too so you and Shirley are both tracking in the same direction. But memory is cheaper than a new CPU (or system) and faster to obtain too. The software is a new version of SurfCAM to do surface modeling and a particular "rush" part's tooling is extremely complicated (lots of curves and details) so it is taking close to two hours to display and I assume also create the program then need to load into CNC mill. Because of the complexity though I also thought it might be RAM. I will have them run it again and see what all is running and also if the disk is getting hammered for swap file activity (indication of memory starved thrashing or not).

Thanks,
-Todd

Michael,

I support over a dozen CAD workstations, and adequate RAM is definitely one
of the more important factors as far as speed is concerned. There are
however a few other factors that are equally important; CPU speed, graphics
card, and HDD/file access speed (depending on whether the files are local or
networked). I would take a look at the graphics card and make sure that it
is approved by the software company that makes your CAD package and that you
are running appropriate drivers, as well as checking the newsgroups and
trade rags for user recommendations. I'm not familiar with CAM products,
but if you have to run CAM simultaneously with the CAD, then you want to
look into a dual CPU system or at least a HyperThreading machine with XP
Pro. While it seems you are running short on RAM (most 3D packages tell you
1GB is suggested for performance results), it won't help much if the problem
is elsewhere. Your VAR might also be able to help you out with a few tips,
as they should be the most familiar with their own software.

Good luck,

Hi Todd,

Check your temp files (in W2K there are some in each user's account under
Documents and Settings, in addition to the one in the WinNT file) - delete
everthing in the temp files, without deleting the temp folder itself. Try
defrag?

Thanks, the video is a 128MB Geforce 5200 same as in all our other CAD machines. The SurfCAM seems to choke on the calculation phase where there is a progress bar beneath the image and it just crawls. Running at about 1% progress per minute on the one very complicated tool. The heat seems to be off now so I think they either waited and got what they needed or ran it on another machine. At least they are not complaining to me anymore. We never tried adding the different speed DDR RAM in the slow machine. I've gone ahead and ordered matching DDR RAM to bring it up to 1GB so when that arrives I will put it in and we'll try to generate the offending tool again and see if there is a difference.

Thanks again,
-Todd

Just one last thought, your vidio card. I just replaced 2 Eng.
Workstations. Increasing the memory to 512 MB didn't help, these 700Mhz PC.
Some CAD packages want high end vidio cards, as well as memory and
processor.
I went to a 2.6 GHz processor, 1 GB memory, and a sweet vidio card. No more
hangups, studdering, etc.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] PC Memory Question

We have a CAD package that is really slow on a 2.4Ghz PC with 512MB RAM.
Engineers want to see if adding memory will help. System has DDR 226 memory
in it now. I have another temporarily unused PC with DDR 266 in it. Can I
use this in the 226 machine or is the speed/frequency critical to be exactly
the same? All we need to do is see if buying more memory will speed the
software up a bit (currently at vendor recommended level but my rule of
thumb is always use double recommended). But I am not real clear on
mix/matching DDR RAM and if "faster" can be used in slower machine (or is it
the other way around?).

Thanks,

What CAD software package are you using? We use Autodesk Inventor 8 and
have had issues with video cards in the past. Autodesk doesn't support any
GeForce or Radeon cards. Those are all of the consumer Nvidia and ATI
cards. They only support the Nvidia Quadro series and the ATI Fire GL
series for CAD. The GeForce and Radeon cards still work, but we have
noticed occasional performance issues and glitches when using them. Also,
I've found that anything over 512 MB of system memory doesn't make that much
difference unless you're working on a huge CAD drawing / model.

The package is called SurfCAM and the video was on their recommended list. Works fine for everything but the super complicated tool (lots of curves and seperate surface features) hence the thought it was memory related.
