I can't comment as to whether Kunal's suggestion will help solve the
problem, but if you want to have a change to services take effect, you
need to change the value in:
HKLM | System | CURRENTCONTROLSET | Services | Browser | Parameters
When a Windows machine boots, it tries to load values from the "Current
Control Set" section (the values in effect at the time of the most
recent shutdown/reboot) . Once a user successfully logs in to the
machine, the values in "CurrentControlSet" are copied into
"ControlSet001" (which happens after the settings from 001 are copied to
002, which happens after the settings from set 002 are copied into 003).
From my experience, "Browser" problems are a major pain to isolate and
correct, especially ever since the WINS service was demoted to
"non-essential for a Windows network" status. True - it's not needed,
but it had its up-sides... There are two Resource Kit tools that are
helpful: "Browser Monitor" and "Domain Monitor" - these were part of the
NT4 ResKit - I'm not sure if they're part of the latest kits anymore.
In a perfect world, you'd want your "Master Browsers" to be servers -
not workstations - so you'd want to make appropriate changes to all
workstations to remove them from contention for becoming Master
Browsers.

Check to see if the computers in question are using themselves as the
browser master for the domain. Check the event logs on the server in the
domain which is the operations master (i think) - you should see
something like "computer xxx forced an election" or something like that.
Set this registry key on the computers in question to "No", the default
is "Auto"
HKLM | System | ControlSet001 | Services | Browser | Parameters

I had the same thing for awhile. One PC was a new XP and every day
without fail at 3pm as soon as it was powered off the Win2K PC in the
next cubicle froze Vantage. I stood there and watched it happen several
times. Two seperate end-run lines to computer room. I put them on two
difference switches too with no effect. Put them both an a new Gigabit
switch (HP ProCurve) still no effect. Replaced the freezing one with an
XP PC....no more problem. I never did figure it out other than chalking
it up to some kind of sensitivity by Vantage to some "blip" in the
network that the NIC on that PC objected to.
Check around to see if someone leaves at about 4:00 and shut their PC
off then. Then if you find one try leaving it on but logged out.

I have two and now three PC's that lock up about 4:00 every day. The
first
two are both in the shop and I thought it might be a power problem. Now
I
have a third one doing it that is in the office on a different circuit.
It's always around 4:00 but not exactly the same time. Vantage just
locks
and the PC has to be rebooted. The wiring is only 6 months old, it was
all
replaced with the new server. The two in the shop are on the same HP
switch
but the office is on a different HP switch. I have other PC's in the
office
and the shop that never hiccup when this happens.
I can't find any scheduled tasks running that would consume resources.
The
Vantage server is only six months old and sized for version 8 even
though we
are still on 6.1. I'm not an IT guy and we don't have a full time IT
person. Any thoughts on what to look for or even where to look?
Sincerely,
Mitchell Kirby
