OT: Phones & dataplans for businesses

We are with Verizon and are switching to Android phones. The CEO tethers
his phone quite regularly to his laptop when on the road. I still have my
Blackberry because it is the World Traveler addition and IÂ’m supposed to go
to England in September J

Like Mark, we're with Verizon and I'm trying to kill off blackberries as
quickly as I can.

Android is now our platform of choice.

International "just works" now, it used to be a hassle that I got yelled at
for every time our owner went to China.

I currently manage 40 lines in a mixture of phones, smart devices, tablets,
and wireless cards for laptops.

Hi everyone,
So, this is off-topic, but I'm looking for some feedback on what other businesses are doing for their phone/data plans for their employees. We currently are with Sprint and have Blackberries(various models), but it's time to re-evaluate and see what options are out there.

We use Verizon.
Our field guys get very basic flip phones that are made to be more rugged.
Our sales/service/etc people get android units. We also have USB modems for
a number of people. All in all this seems to work pretty well and the costs
are fairly reasonable.

For my 2 cent I'd get away from Blackberries if you can. It's pretty much a
dead platform now.

I just went through a re-evaluation with corp-reimbursed phones vs. a corporate umbrella account. We’re a relatively small company, so pooling our employees’ phones (less than 20) didn’t make sense and yielded little savings.

We kept the reimbursement but I also just bought a few devices in an attempt to somewhat standardize IT’s support. Blackberries, iPhones, Android.... too much.

So another leg of the analysis was evaluating the devices. After a thorough evaluation, I went with Windows Phone 7 for the office. I’ve been using a blackberry since 1999 and the WP7 OS is the best fusion of biz and play, IMO. Intuitive and easy to manage. Nokia is coming out with new WP7 phones on most carriers soon. I’ve used them all and I was most impressed, begrudgingly, by Microsoft’s new WP7 OS.

IMO, you need to figure which network (Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, etc) is the best for where your guys need to go. Then get devices that would work for your environment.

My boss is a huge apple fan so we all have iPhones. No rhyme or reason...just the boss likes it a lot and, yes, we have our service guys using iPads. We use AT&T because it works best in the Chicago area.

Is it pricey? No worse than anyone else and AT&T seems to have better international plans because now we are traveling outside of the US a lot.

We use Verizon because it works best in NW Minnesota. Used to use all Blackberries but in the process of moving everyone to Droid and iPhones. Blackberries used to be the perfect answer for corporate email but now it is so easy to setup any smartphone that the Blackberries have become more of a hassle than I want to deal with. Can't wait for the day they are all upgraded and I can shut down the BES. We also have a couple people travelling overseas and some full time overseas. The full time ones buy plans over there and I don't need to deal with them. The travelers have been having pretty good luck with Verizon access (much better than a couple years ago).

About 2 years ago I moved our then 60 lines from Sprint to Verizon. Verizon provides better service than Sprint in our area plus they reimbursed us the ETF's and gave us a 7K credit. After the sale of the Sprint phones on Ebay we made about 10K off of the deal...not to mention about a 1K savings each month.

This last November most of our now 80 lines came up for renewal so for Christmas I upgraded our entire fleet to iPhones at no cost. After weighing the Android phones against the iPhone 4 it was an easy decision. I like both platforms but the battery life on the iPhone is phenomenal. With the Androids I was constantly getting complaints about battery life. Syncing to Exchange all day long I still get at least 2 days before I absoluletly need to charge. They both provide the same features (ie: neither sync Outlook tasks natively) so it was a wash there.

At the end of the day I don't care what we use as long as it's functional and since most of my users felt the need to hop on the Apple bandwagon it was nice to be able to give them something they wanted. The IT complaint department was slow that week if you know what I mean.
