If I could indulge the group for some advice for my daughter. She's going to
be a teacher and would like a portable for her student teaching this fall
and, hopefully, a teaching position after the first of the year. I know
nothing about portables/notebooks/laptops, whatever they're called these
days.

Here are my random thoughts: First choice Dell, second choice Gateway. We
have a Gateway store nearby which may be of value in case of a problem.
Weight is not a key factor. She'll be carrying it from her apt. to the car
then into the school, short trips. She will be using Word, Excel,
Powerpoint, PrintShop (or similar) and the internet (research and those all
important music downloads!). What models of Dell or Gateway are recommended
for this application? (I normally purchase the latest and greatest and then
hang on to it for as long as possible as opposed to purchasing last year's
latest and greatest).

The school where she's doing her student teaching is all Apple/Mac. Are
there compatibility problems? (Who knows what the next school/district will
be.)

What screen options are preferred? LCD, Plasma...? What about disk size and
removable storage units (zip disks, CDR...?)

Any thoughts to narrow and focus my search/research would really be
appreciated!!

Tech TV had a bit last night about under-$1,000 notebooks. They ended up recommending Dell. I don't recall which model but the info might be available at www.techtv.com . We are thinking of getting one too for our son when he graduates from law school in June.

Dell with "In home service plan", they come to you (most time next day) to fix any problems if any. We have a dozen notebooks and this service plan has paid off greatly.

Marty,

I myself like Dell. They have a great support staff and have a decent price. I would look on this website ( www.gotapex.com/deals) to get discount codes. This is a great site to get all types of deals. Any dell model should fit her needs.

If you are going to interface with Macs then I would suggest getting Microsoft Office. If the Macs have Microsoft Office too then the files should be interchangeable. Also, for Photo software, I would go with Adobe. Those files will also be interchangeable with Macs. They maybe other options but those should work for sure.

We use a couple of Dell Latitudes now. And have an Inspiron (higher price)
that is 3 yrs old and just fine. 4-hr response service contract definitely
the way to go for people out in the field I would think. Dell phone tech
support is invaluable.

IMO, Dell is the only way to go for notebooks. Be sure to get the "Pro"
version of Win 2000 or XP. The Home version's networking is intentionally
crippled, and might not be able to connect to a school's network.

Perhaps this info about "Name Brand" laptops will help with your selection:
