OT - Printjob Header

Mike and everyone:

I found this page that has some good info on "How-to" for separator pages.
Kind-of an "Everything you always wanted to know about separators - but were
afraid to ask." I hope to QUICKLY be able to put together a separator page
that is easy to spot in the pile of printouts. The standard ones in windows
are pretty non-descript. If it doesn't take too long, I'll give it a try.
Knock yourselves out, if you're so inclined. -Gary

Gary,

They are text files, edit with Notepad, etc. They can contain PCL /
Postscript code if you want to get fancy. I have no first hand experience
in customising them. There are 3 example .SEP files in the SYSTEM32
directory that you could look at. Sounds like an interesting little
project. Much easier to setup with Novell and Banner pages.

A printer separator page is configured by creating a text file using a
number of special control codes. The basic format of the separator page is
as follows

$ ---- this can be any character, and must be the first character on the
first line. Choose a character not normally used to be the control
character, in this case $
$LUser Name $N ---- $L is used to display normal test until another code is
found, $N displayed the username
$L, Job Number $I ---- $I displays the job number
$E ---- $E means end of page

Other characters you can use are

$B$S ---- Turn on block character printing
$D ---- Data job printer
$F<filename> ---- A file to print
$H ---- Printer specific control code
$x ---- Where x is a number of blank lines to print
$T ---- Time job was printed
$U ---- Turns off block character printing
$Wxx ---- Width of the separator page

To configure the printer to use the separator file:

Start the Printer Control Panel Applet (Start - Settings - Printers)
Right Click on a printer and select Properties
Click the "Separator Page" button
Enter the path and file name of the separator page file and click OK
Click OK again to exit the Printer Setup

I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I wasn't able to figure out how. Up
till now, we haven't had to worry about individual headers for each user, on
printjobs. I need to have each person's name appear on either a separate
page at the beginning of a printjob, or at the top of the pages. It's a
mess at our shared printer, trying to sort out what belongs where. It's on
an HP JetDirect 500X print server. Can someone explain what I'm missing?

Gary,

Try looking at the settings of the printer.
Under Properties - General Tab
Our HP5000 has a "Separator Page" setup button.

Thanks Rich. Now that I know what it's called (separator page) I found the
help on it. But the standard separator pages in windows (2000, 98 and NT)
aren't award winners. I want something that looks a little better than
that. I looked at the actual contents of the sep documents, and it looks
like they're done with PCL5. It's been way too many years since I did
anything in PCL5. Does anybody have a decent separator page already
modified, that I could change the company name on and use? Thanks. -Gary

Gary,

Try using the field Jobhead.username. We have it in the page header and
prints on page 1 of our jobs.

Jim - Are we talking apples - apples? I'm looking for something that works
for all printjobs, not just Vantage. I haven't worked with NT network
printers much, so I could be missing a lot here. -Gary
