OT: Pulling my hair out

We have had a similar problem "twice". First time it turned out our vending
machines were on the same circuit as an office area. The computers kept
locking up until we ran a different circuit. The second time it turned out
a specific screen saver and memory combination was the problem. We had a
couple of users whose machines would freeze up. We swapped their machines
out and the replacements developed the same problem. It turned out they
were the only ones using the screen saver. A memory swap fixed the problem.

I'm with Mike on this....change out the cable from your office to the new
switch...also, move a computer that is locking up to another location
(like
your office) and see if it still locks up. If it doesn't it more than
likely is the cable or the cable ends. If that doesn't do it move the QC
switch to a different port on your main switch.

Sounds to me like a problem with the network drop -or- perhaps a failing
port on your hub or switch.

Okay here we go - This is driving me crazy
I have fur machines in our quality department
Of those, three are continually locking up
All are about the same age
All are running Windows 2000 Professional
All are speced out the same - Pentium III 733mnhz, 128 megs ram etc
Every latest service pack out there
SP4 and all the newest security updates
You do a WINDOWSUPDATE and it comes back that they need nothing
Typical apps, such as MS Office etc

____________________________________________________________________________
__________
I have performed the following diagnosis tests
I have taken one machine out and wiped it completely and rebuilt it. -
Still
locks up

All the machines have been scanned for viruses, pests, trojans, with
several
different products - Nothing
I scanned them for the Sasser virus - Nothing
I ran Windows office update and got all the latest patches for Office
I out in a new switch in that department
One machine had a bad case fan and I replaced that

I took a good working machine with no problems from engineering and moved
it
to quality - Guess what - Locks up now

All the "processor fans and Case fans" are operating properly!

____________________________________________________________________________
__________

Two things are driving me crazy about this
#1 - The Quality Manager is not having a problem with his pc
#2 - I have had a machine lock up when I was logged in as Administrator

Machine just freezes

The only thing I am thinking is electrical although our maintenance
department does not think that is it

I have a shielded wire running from the main switch in my office to the QC
Switch - Its heavily shielded though?

I am at a lose at what to do at this point

One guys machine locked up four times before lunch today

Anyone got any ideas? I am at a loss at what to do at this point

No one else in the building is having this problem!

Thanks guys /gals

James, It wasn't clear.....did you try different cable/connectors. I always
start blaming the cable and work backwards from there. Run a new temporary
and see if that does it.

You've probably already checked, but are all of these computers connected
into a common switch at any point? I have seen hubs/switches that go bad do
some really flaky things that can be difficult to trace. I have had
individual ports on switches go bad and cause strange results.

I'm with Mike on this....change out the cable from your office to the new
switch...also, move a computer that is locking up to another location (like
your office) and see if it still locks up. If it doesn't it more than
likely is the cable or the cable ends. If that doesn't do it move the QC
switch to a different port on your main switch.

I replaced the hub in the QC Dept and still have the same problem
The only thing I am left with is the drop from my office to theirs
THe crazy thing that makes it harder is they all don't lock up at the
same time

Have you checked the power management settings, and the screen savers?
Does the problem occur when the computers are inactive, or do they lock
up
while a person is using them?

Couple other things to add to the already mentioned items:
1. There was some discussion awhile back about timeout settings on server dropping network connections due to inactivity.
2. One thing I always look at first with lockups is power management settings - both in BIOS and Windows. I turn it all off.
3. How far is the run from server to switch? If long could there be a ground potential difference between electrical systems? Usually only an issue between seperate buildings but.....

Okay here we go - This is driving me crazy
I have fur machines in our quality department
Of those, three are continually locking up
All are about the same age
All are running Windows 2000 Professional
All are speced out the same - Pentium III 733mnhz, 128 megs ram etc
Every latest service pack out there
SP4 and all the newest security updates
You do a WINDOWSUPDATE and it comes back that they need nothing
Typical apps, such as MS Office etc
____________________________________________________________________________
__________
I have performed the following diagnosis tests
I have taken one machine out and wiped it completely and rebuilt it. - Still
locks up

All the machines have been scanned for viruses, pests, trojans, with several
different products - Nothing
I scanned them for the Sasser virus - Nothing
I ran Windows office update and got all the latest patches for Office
I out in a new switch in that department
One machine had a bad case fan and I replaced that

I took a good working machine with no problems from engineering and moved it
to quality - Guess what - Locks up now

All the "processor fans and Case fans" are operating properly!

You didn't mention anything about power -- that's usually my first
guess, esp for machines in shop areas. Are they on any kind or UPS or
suppressor?

Try running one of them on a UPS for a couple days and see if clears up.

Ethernet cabling is designed to not need any shielding. It could actually
cause trouble if it's connected to a chassis or AC ground at both ends,
since there's probably a potential difference between the two. I'd either
go unshielded, or make sure it's only grounded at one end.

James,

Your problem is fur balls. Mix some canned pumpkin in their food, and brush
them more often. @~]

See if any of the network cabling run comes within a couple of feet of HID
or flourescent lighting - the ballasts cause network noise that can
sometimes interfere with smooth transmission.
