OT - Question for moderator

Ok - Here's the semi-official answer:

* Off topic emails should specify "[Off Topic] --subject--" in the subject
line. [OT] is also just fine. Whatever - just indicate that it's not a
Vantage topic so speed readers can skip the msg's based on subject line.

* Just about anything related to Vantage or running a IT department is fair
game. Just toss in a little common sense along the way?

* The only topic that we have tried to block is "blatant" EPICOR bashing.
We had a problem with this in the early days and decided to try and keep it
under control. Humor or subtle msg's are usually allowed and to some extent
enjoyed. ( Ok, so this isn't an exact science ... )

* Generally speaking, consultants etc are not allowed to advertise their
services on the list. We had some long conversations with a number of
consultants 4-5 years ago about this and the consensus was that it was a
slippery slope that we just didn't want to try. On the other hand
consultants etc ARE on the list and do contribute when they can. On paper
at least they generate good will in the process ...

* If you have used servers, switches, etc that you think the group might be
interested in - post a off topic msg with the details. Just don't get
carried away - eBay this isn't.

* If you, God forbid, want to hire someone from within the Vantage
community. PLEASE feel free to post the details for the job. Again - off
topic and we request that you ask for replies "Off List".

* If you want to hire a consultant or some other expert on the list for
some work - post what you are looking for as an off topic msg and again - we
request that you ask for replies "Off List".

Does that about cover it ?

Since nobody has responded officially (on list anyway, I'd be interested in
the answer too) I'll offer my 2 cents....
1. First check out the domain names of some of the people on the list,
especially with less obvious company names, to check their web site and see
what they do. This would not bother anyone.
2. Personally I'd rather the off-topic subjects be related in at least some
way to running Vantage - including network support and other technical
issues such as anti-virus and spam control which affect the Vantage users.
As columnist Bob Lewis puts it in the title of his newsletter to "Keep the
Joint Running".
3. Some people don't even like the non-Vantage technical stuff - hence the
suggestion to put OT in brackets (like [OT] ) to make a rules wizard easier
to weed it out. This is after all a Vantage group.

On the other hand if you are really stuck for a supplier of a particular
service (after trying #1 above and other avenues) perhaps it would be OK.
Most companies doing that type of work would be happy for the opportunity.

I was wondering if there were any rules for off topic messages? If
not, could you tell me if it acceptable to post a message to the
gruop if I need a particular service/work done to see if any
companies in the group do this type of work?

Thanks!
