Turns out the links were NOT broken. Very much a mystery to me. After burning the entire QualityDocs folder I tried one of the documents and the \\Victor was magically changed to D: within the Word document. Sort of like when it was stored within Word the root location ( \\Victor) was not actually stored but rather a relative location (such as "whatever is directly above \QualityDocs). Someday with other applications I may need to try the sharing and lmhosts redirect but not for Word apparently.
Thanks,
-Todd C.

Todd,
You could try and share the CDROM as "QualityDocs" and then add the
ipaddress of the laptop with the name "Victor" to the lmhosts file.
Something like this:
192.168.200.1 victor #PRE
Then if you were to ping victor you should get the local ip address,
just make sure the CD is shared out as the same share name on the
server. Might just work

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Redirecting \\server\ name
We have several hundred word documents with internal links to each other
that make up our ISO documentation. Our QA Director has asked me to
burn the whole set onto a CD. Problem is all the references are in the
form: \\Victor\QualityDocs\.... where Victor is the server they are on.
Once I burn the docs to CD for use on a non-networked laptop the links
are not going to work.
Is there a way to simulate a network node so that it points to the local
D: (CDROM) drive (or the local PC's name). Something like \\Victor =
\\Laptop ? Perhaps something in the HOSTS file to point to the laptop's
own IP address? Or anything to be done about pointing at the CD drive
(D:) like if I "share" the D: drive as "QualityDocs"?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
